Mucus and blood in nappies

DS is 5 months old, he’s EBF and has had blood and mucus on and off in his nappies since 12 weeks. We’ve been back and forth from doctors and it’s been a nightmare.

they’ve done bloods and all came back normal. I eliminated dairy and soya for a month with no change to symptoms at all, dietitian said CMPA is unlikely. He’s a happy baby, gains weight well. No bouts of excessive crying but his nappies are not ok.

because he is generally a happy baby, doctors don’t seem bothered.

I don’t know if anyone else has any other suggestions as I’m at a complete loss now?? 😔 I’ve attached a picture of his most recent nappy so you can see how much mucus we’re dealing with.

(this is my first time posting on here so I’ve also posted in allergies I’m not sure if that’s right)

Sorry to anyone who views this post and wasn’t expecting the nappy picture. I thought I’d posted it as sensitive 😔

Have to say I look at children's poo for a living and it's not immediately obvious to me what is abnormal about that stool. Breastfed baby stool can be quite loose and stringy. If the child is gaining weight it's much less likely to be an absorption / inflammation problem. You may find the stools change a lot when solids are introduced

Really? If that’s so then that’s really reassuring! Dr Google really makes it sound like mucus is something worth worrying about. The blood has mostly stopped but we are now left with a fair chunk of mucus like the nappy posted. I’m really worried if it’s allergy related that we’ll be weaning soon so was hoping for answers beforehand.

thank you so much for your response 🙂

Looks like a normal breastfed baby nappy. Is there blood present?

From memory (it was a while ago) but when I breast fed both my dc their nappies were similar

Blood and mucus are signs of food allergies as there is something irritating the guts.

My son was diagnosed with multiple food allergies which was causing allergic enterocolitis (gut inflammation) at 3 months and poo was similar. I was insisting on bf and went on a severe vegan diet and ruled virtually everything out but at the end I was anemic and him too. I started him on Neocate at about 5 months and introduced one solid at a time so we could actually see what was causing the irritation. We were lucky to do it all under the allergy clinic at Evelina Children's Hospital. He's 15 now and the only thing he doesn't tolerate very well are eggs (they're fine on cakes and other dishes but not fried or scrambled), everything else is fine.

Unfortunately, the only three decent allergy clinics in the UK are Evelinas, Kings and Adenbrooks, the rest is just lottery. GPs are clueless about allergy which is not understood and not studied or funded enough.

I would suggest going back to the GP and insisting on a referral. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you for your reply. We definitely haven’t ruled out allergies at this point. I’ll go back to the gp and pester them again. It’s been such a long road of back and forth and just doesn’t feel like we’re really being listened to.

I think we will do the same with regards to weaning and introducing things slowly. The elimination diet really took its toll on me and obviously that has a direct impact on him so if we have to go down that route again I think that will be the end of our BF journey unfortunately 😔

im glad you were listened to, thank you for sharing your story. I hope we have a similar outcome x

That nappy looks fairly normal to me to be honest. The blood would obviously not be.
