Broken Arm: Any Advice

I wonder if any of you could advise: ds has broken his arm, he is 7, and in a cast from upper arm to wrist. He had a fall on some park equipment.
So when the cast was fitted I was advised surgery is a likely possibility as they cannot manipulate the bone to grow straight and to do this when putting the cast on was causing ds too much pain (he screamed the place down)
At the follow up appointment we’ve since been advised by the hospital the limb will be noticeably bent, but they now don’t want to operate they want the limb to heal with the cast and are hopeful it will straighten out, although this could take up to a year or so.
We have a follow up appointment soon but I am wondering if anyone has been through this before, or if anyone would be so kind as to share any advice.
I’m finding it hard to be able to appropriately advocate for my child as I’m not an expert in this field, I don’t know if the surgery or the what feels like a ‘let’s see what happens’ approach is normal?
I sort of felt like it was an easy way out/saving
money and resources approach but of course I could be completely wrong.
Any advice would be greatly received.

My DC has broken both his arms and each time they needed manipulating into the correct position. The first time they did it under a general anaesthetic as they thought they would probably need to put pins into it (they didn't.) The second time they sedated him.

Did they not give your DC any pain relief? I would want to be asking why they didn't so that they could correct the deformity. I hope he heals quickly and is not in too much pain.

My dd8 is going through this. I’ve trusted them as I don’t want her to have surgery. I check every letter to ensure what I’ve been told is reported the same.

I doubt it’s saving money as any deformity will end up costing more.

The leaving it to sort itself out is a new thing based on some evidence that children’s arms don’t always need to be fixed. I’ve read about it.

Don’t forget you can always ask for a second opinion

Thanks all for your replies, im
relatively new to Mumsnet so not sure I’m replying appropriately, I hope I am.
No he wasn’t given any pain relief, he screamed the place down when they were trying to manipulate the cast into a place which would aid the recovery. I should have questioned this but at that point was trying to calm him down.
I think at my next appointment I will ask for a second opinion so thanks for the suggestion.
We don’t really get any information on the injury etc just letters of appointment.
I will query things more at the next appointment which is next week, I think I am a little overemotional about it all too which isn’t helping the rational part of my brain.
