Sons operation

So a bit of background, my 7 year old son has chronic tonsillitis, used to get it every 6 weeks, calmed down a bit but still gets it every 3-4 months without fail. When it was really bad (May 2023 he nearly became septic) we paid £200 to have a private consultation and he kindly did the paperwork and consent form and put us straight on the NHS list. We wouldn't afford to go private as it was £5000 and I was expecting another baby too. Fast forward to today, I get the call we have been waiting months for which is a date for the tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy! I thought I would be thrilled but I'm now absolutely shitting myself at the thought of him having anesthetic etc. the operation is scheduled for mid September so not far away.

Has anyone any experience of this? Things for me to expect? Recovery? Time off school? Sorry for the long post but wanted to give a little background so people wouldn't say oh just cancel it because this is something he does suffer with terribly and we have waited a long time for!

No, don’t cancel! I’ve no experience of this, but one of mine had surgery when they were less than a year old. It’s not nice, but got to be done, and he will have forgotten about it in no time. It’s probably going to be worse for you!

Don't cancel. My mum cancelled mine and I ended up having them out as an adult. Dd had hers out the same year as me, although not nice she recovered better than me.
Everyone is different dd wanted cold foods, I couldn't tolerate anything cold or too hot, everything was lukewarm.
Lots of painkillers in the house. Lots of fluids and rest. Dd was told she needed two weeks off school (due to risk of infection) as she was alreadyvulnerable. She was ready after a about 4 days!

I had my tonsils out when I was 4. I still remember it. I was perfectly fine. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. You are obviously more worried than he is .

My 2 year old had their tonsils out and it was the best thing we ever did! Please don’t cancel. The anaesthetist will go through everything with you.

It’s usually two weeks off school and very regular pain relief so they can eat and drink, make sure you’re stocked up on calpol and nurofen. It’s quite normal for them to recover well but then have a bit of a dip at home before they’re pick up again. Most tonsillectomies are done as daycases now unless you have any other reasons such as sleep apnoea to stay in overnight.
