Newborn with severe reflux that started with going purple and stopping breathing multiple times…
The first night we brought our baby girl home she had her first episode of turning purple and not breathing after vomiting a small amount. We were told it can be quite normal as they are full of mucus after birth and they need to clear it. Safe to say I didn’t sleep that night. The following day it happened again but worse, we couldn’t get her to start breathing again and had to call for an ambulance…but by the time they arrived we’d got her back breathing and all her observations were fine. We knew something was wrong so went to the children’s assessment unit where we stayed for 10 days…baby girl continued having these episodes while there until they started her on Omeprazole and Gaviscon and they had chance to kick in.
We've been through the most awful week with seeing your 3 day old baby on permanent oxygen and feeding tubes.
We’re now home and her symptoms are under control with the medication but I’d love to connect with other moms that have been through this. Get advice and just have someone to talk to that understands.

Did they check for hole in the heart? Or other causes like tof or layrngomalcia

Hopefully while in they did heart scan and some other basics - such a worry just go back if changes or concerns and state what they have not ruled out.

How is she fed? Did they check for an allergy? I’m assuming as she has been in hospital that they ran a load of checks?

Flowers this can’t be easy for you.

She did have a heart scan that came back all clear. Also had a brain scan, 2 chest X-rays, a lot of blood tests and everything came back normal…
i think they looked for layrngomalcia, well i know they looked in her throat and said it all looked fine.
Ive just been reading up so much about reflux and haven’t found anyone that has had such a severe reaction…although it’s now under control and she hasn’t had an episode is 5 days it’s still just a constant worry it’s going to happen again.

Im breastfeeding her, they ran a load of checks but didn’t check for an allergy. We have questioned this but they said they aren’t worried about it at the moment.

Now on medication she’s not being sick, just very windy (from the bottom) which makes her very angry…she also seems to poo every time she trumps but I’m not surprised because it is so forceful…her stool is also very runny but that is normal for breastfed babies and she was on precautionary antibiotics in hospital so they could still be coming out of her? She also has very forceful hiccups and sometimes chokes on her feeds and holds her breath.

Its honestly been the most traumatic experience….

A friend’s baby had severe reflux years ago and turned out to be lactose intolerant. Even if she’s breastfed, if you are consuming dairy products then that will be passed on. I don’t know much more about it than that, not having experienced it myself, but that might be something relatively simple to check out?
