Worried! Help! Toddlers eye/ any ophthalmologists!?

Hi please can anyone on here help?
before I start I want to say my son is already under the care of an ophthalmologist team at the hospital and has been seen a few months ago but I’ve woken up to something I’m worried about.

I have called the hospital and they are seeing him but not till next week so I’m worrying.

my son is 3 and has been diagnosed with a coloboma in the left eye. I took some pictures of him his morning and saw a lot of his left eye was white / glazed over . I’m worried about retinoblastoma so badly, I can’t get it out of my head. I know they say this can be a huge sign of one of the eyes is white on the picture and one is normal? I can attach an image so you can see. I have also taken more this morning with the flash on still , and some of the pictures are completely normal with no white at all and a normal looking eye , but some are not and have white over one eye.

thanks, I’m so worried :( x

I don't think anyone would be sensible to try and diagnose something important over the internet. You're best off contacting the ophthalmologist service you already see via their secretary. You may even be able to send them the photos for review.

Send the photo to the secretary.
You are seeing them next week so they will tell you if need to come in sooner
Next week is not long to wait

SavetheNHS · 08/08/2024 12:16

Does your hospital have an Eye Casualty type department? Sometimes there are walk in centres like this where they could check his eyes today.
Phoning and speaking to one of the secretaries is also a good idea as there may be a cancellation he can be slotted into or they may be able to overbook a clinic.
If neither of these is possible, phone around for an optician appointment as somewhere will have one today. Optometrists are trained eye professionals and can examine the inside of the eye. They will be able to tell you if it is concerning and he needs to be seen ASAP or if it can wait until next week.

Thanks everyone , he’s actually going in tomorrow now at 10:30am as they had a cancellation. They knew I was stressed so slotted him in. I’m so worried but he does have a large coloboma in that exact eye so I’m hoping it’s that.
to me it looks like retinoblastoma pictures but I know google is a scary place. DS already has an eye diagnosis.
he also was diagnosed and this coloboma was found , 9 weeks ago. So his last thorough eye check with drops and behind the eyes and pictures was all done 9 weeks ago and everything was clear then so it would of formed in that time if it’s that :(

The coloboma can cause this appearance it will depend on the size and location of the coloboma. The white pupil is called leukocoria and although retinoblastoma is one cause there are other causes including coloboma and cataract

theeyeofdoe · 10/08/2024 08:45

As the PP said, a retinal coloboma can cause the eye to look like that. I'm sure it's just that, they would have noticed a tumour when he was seen 9 weeks ago.

lifeisafunnyoldgame · 10/08/2024 08:47

How did you get on @Honeyybee?

BangingOn · 10/08/2024 08:51

@Honeyybee hopefully your mind has been put at rest by now, but my son had retinoblastoma and if your DS is under the care of ophthalmology there is no way they wouldn’t have picked up a tumour already.

Hope all is well, I can understand why you were worried.

Hello everyone thank you for checking in! I thought I would update as we have just come back from holiday so only just seen messages!
we went to the appointment and it was just his coloboma luckily! They did tell me it can cause this ( but not at the time of diagnosis of coloboma!!) only on the last appointment so now I don’t freak out everytime he gets a white eye on a flash image, they said it’s normal for him and checked him over again. I wish they told me this when he first got diagnosed with the coloboma.

@BangingOn so sorry to hear this and I hope your son is well now and hope you are ok! So frightening.

@lifeisafunnyoldgame thanks for asking and checking in!

im a worrier, he also had open heart surgery as a baby so everything just gets me absolutely worked up with anxiety! Xx
