GP friend told me the golden rules - worked a treat.
To keep temp and swelling down - paracetamol then two hours later ibuprofen them para again- repeat as necessary.
To keep itching at bay - daily antihistamine and then liberal coatings of Eurax. It's amazing stuff, lasts for hours. You used to be able to get lotion but I think only creams now. It's still the only thing we use for itchy bites. Brilliant.
For child - unlimited ice lollies whatever the season, wearing only pants and sunshine if possible.
And distraction!

Good luck.

I thought they advised against ibuprofen for chicken pox as it can lead to skin infections.

Never give ibuprofen for chicken pox!

@hannsmum honestly? If it's been that bad she's up crying in pain with the itchyness I'd take her to your local A&E, she might need IV antivirals and pain killers

crumpet · 06/08/2024 03:04

Porridge baths helped dd - oats at the end of an old pair of tights hung under the tap she had several a day when it was at its worst.

Are Aveeno products available in the UK? Or Eucerin?

In the US kids don't get chicken pox anymore we have a vaccine for it.

Where can I get chloramphenicol? She is not sleeping at all

I do apologise OP, I meant chlorphenamine which is usually piriton -chloramphenicol is an antibiotic Blush

(and that’s why you shouldn’t take medical advice off the internet)

I hope you’re having a better night tonight.

There's a vaccine over here but only privately so it's £150 for both injections.

Yes they are. I use it as my daily moisturiser and used Aveeno cream this night for her out of desperation, nope didn't work

Do NOT give ibuprofen as it can give adverse skin effects with chicken pox.

mummyh2016 · 06/08/2024 06:54

Head and shoulders baths. Sounds bonkers but worked for my DD.

ManyATrueWord · 06/08/2024 08:27

More than one type of antihistamine. Following a tip from a GP if one isn't working I try another. Phenergen is in our house for travel sickness but I did resort to it once for itching. When I have flare ups I am taking one in the morning and a different one at night.

Are you giving paracetamol? That helped me as an adult, just somehow deadened the pain response a bit.

Ice on the spots. Plastic ice are ood for this.

As a person who has had infected eczema a lot, searching with a silicon hairbrush helps me. I can tear my own skin off with my fingernails but using something else is a bit different. Don't break the skin though.

Ahwig · 06/08/2024 09:00

My pharmacist suggested potassium permanganate in the bath. It turned the bath water purple which my son thought was hilarious and gave him a bit of a purple hue which he also thought was funny and it did definitely help with the itching

We are in this exact situation. My 5 year old sailed through with no issues but my 10 year old has it severely, she's really struggling.
Her body is completely covered including eyes, nose, mouth and sensitive areas.

We've got virasoothe, poxyclilin, head and shoulders, oat baths, paracetamol and piriton and nothing is touching it.

Didn't know about the ibuprofen, sorry, outdated advice. Both I and the doc have five late teens now between us, so hopefully it did no harm!
As a PP said - a good example of not taking advice from the internet!!
Good luck.
Seriously - Eurax.

gotohellforheavenssake · 06/08/2024 21:57

Dead Sea salt in the bath

Thecatspjymas · 06/08/2024 23:10

Can't help with the remedies as it seems you have everything I used. I can recommend Bio Oil to prevent scarring though as this helped us massively. Oat baths were also a lifesaver

Rachierach11 · 06/08/2024 23:31

We tried everything for my ds and the only thing that worked was bathing in head and shoulders. Made a huge bubble bath from it and he sat in it for half an hour. When he got out the spots were visibly less inflamed and he was much happier

Telemichus · 07/08/2024 07:36

How’s things today @hannsmum ? I hope you managed a sleep!

Thank you for checking in . She was way better yesterday during the day. So I thought it was over . She hadn’t closed her eyes for 48 hrs then she slept off around 1am. I was happy . Then 3am this morning she was at it again for 2 hours, itching so much and sleep talking , was a nightmare.

she’s sleeping now again so I’m hoping it was the last this midnight

I didn’t know it could be this bad . My DS6 had it bad I thought , but was over in 4 days

I feel your pain. We're on day 3 and the spots keep coming. My son is 4 and miserable.

We have finally gone through it. 4 nights of miserable itching and sleepless nights but she’s way better. I hear the younger the easier it may be so fingers crossed for you.

my son had it a bit bad but was over in 3-4 days
