Does anyone have any experience of leukemia in children?

I'm worried about my almost 3 year old daughter. She's had a cough and snotty nose for the best part of 2 months. And she keeps getting random rashes that come and go.

She also has a lot of small bruises, mainly on her legs but a couple on her torso. I bruise extremely easily myself (am currently covered in unexplainable ones!) and I'm aware she is a typical clumsy 3 year old but I'm also extremely aware that these symptoms combined can be red flags.

The other thing is that she gets bloated very easily. She will wake with a flat tummy but as soon as she's had a bottle of milk and breakfast it's like a round winnie the pooh tummy.

My GP isn't at all concerned and thinks she's just had a few viruses back to back, but she was recently hospitalised for something they insisted was 'just a virus' (it was scarlet fever) so I have little trust in them.

My mum has blood cancer and I can't decide whether that means I'm being extra anxious because it's on my radar or observant because I know some of the typical signs.

Has anyone got any experience of this?

Test for coeliac disease
Test for lactose allergy
Are you both hypermobile?

Sunfyre · 05/08/2024 14:58

No not hypermobile @cestlavielife but my husband has recently had some blood tests that showed elevated levels of the hormone that indicates coeliacs, sorry don't remember what it's called.

Would that explain more than the bloating Though?

Can lactose allergies come on suddenly? She's been having cows milk since age 1 and was combi fed with regular formula from about 4 month

Lactose is a sugar found in milk. It is not possible to be allergic to lactose. Lactose deficiency means the enzyme that digests milk is missing (unusual if you are white European) and gives mainly gut symptoms.

Most leukaemias in children involved very rapid deterioration once the disease process is established, whereas these symptoms sound a lot more slow-moving. This is different from adult leukaemias.

If you are seriously worried it is worth discussing that specific concern with your GP and they can always seek advice from Paediatricians locally to you.
