Seizures

So like most diagnostic journeys this could be a very long post so I will try and make it short.

My DS has had absent seizures since he was 3 months old. It got dismissed and then other symptoms came up and they took it seriously and are currently in the middle of testing. In the last 3 months I have noticed he does other things that I think may also be seizures but what I want to know is can someone who suffers from seizures can they have more than one type? I have no prior experience with this so it’s all new to me.

The things that I’m querying are:

  • dropping to the ground randomly and sometimes his arms and legs twitch
  • half of his face twitching like mad for a couple of seconds
  • Tensing up and convulsing - looks like someone who has had an electric shock but is awake

Yes you can have several types of seizure and what you are describing sound like probable seizures given everything else you've said.

If you can, try to get videos - they are really persuasive evidence for medics. Appreciate it's difficult if they are very transient though. I hope you get answers soon.

If you're already being seen by someone, the best way forward is to contact their team/secretary and say "these new things are happening, if I get videos can I send them"?

feellikeanalien · 03/08/2024 14:43

As other PPs have said video evidence is really important. I am having to do this for DD at the moment and although it is difficult it will really help with any diagnosis.

I feel for you OP. It's horrible seeing it happen to your child and I hate having to video it but the more evidence they have the easier it will be to diagnose. Not all seizures are caused by epilepsy and that is why the video evidence is so important.

There are also many different types of seizures and all the instances you have described could be seizures. Obviously I am not a medical professional but am basing this on what I have seen with DD.

Please take your child to the GP as soon as you can. What you think looks like an electric shock is, in my opinion, a full blown seizure (I’m a registered nurse with experience of seizures). Your son may need medication to manage this condition.
Please, please seek medical advice.

Thanks for your replies. We do have a portal to upload any new videos but they are over with so quickly and (other than the absents) they come with no warnings.

At the beginning I would video him all the time but it was exhausting and making me so anxious. Maybe I have to start doing again because it’s so hard to describe it to the drs.

We have an appointment with the specialist at the end of the month so will bring it up then if i don’t manage to get any of it on video.

@Froniga he is currently under neurology in London. Should I contact them or the GP? It happened today which is what prompted me to write the post because it really really scared me. He’s not even one yet and I just feel so sorry for him.

I would contact the team directly, the GP (reasonably!) is unlikely to have much to add beyond trying to contact them too. If your child has any sort of generalised twitching event with altered consciousness lasting 5 minutes or longer call 999, if they are not themselves after an event or drowsy get seen urgently and they can be sent up to an acute paediatric assessment unit if that's what they need.

If you ring up a Paeds neuro service and say "I am worried my child had a generalised seizure, it looked like an electric shock" I think they will try to review you ASAP.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/08/2024 19:05

If one of my patients I was investigating for seizures was having new types of probably seizures (because the episodes you describe sound pretty suspicious of seizure) I'd want to know about it. Contact the team you're under.

Thank you for your replies. I have emailed with a description of what happened yesterday and explained the other events. Hopefully will hear back soon.

Hi, how have you got on? Currently going through this with my 8 month old x

AuditAngel · 29/08/2025 22:33

My daughter has at least 3 different types of seizures. The type of epilepsy she has is associated with three types of seizures, of which we know she has 2, plus she has a non-typical type (for her diagnosis).

Videos are valuable, but we haven’t managed to get any. I was recommended to record everything in a notebook as you forget what happens when.
