My 2 years old is so healthy, but yesterday all day he was getting reflux and hiccups after meals. He doesn’t have history of any of reflux or digestion issues prior to this. The only thing I can think of. I gave him water when he woke up and he drank 300ml he was so thirsty and then he had his breakfast. He always love Water to drink with meals. I am thinking water with meals caused this!
I booked gp appointment and they gave me Friday 🙂‍↕️ any suggestions! He also hasn’t pooped yesterday which is so not him. He usually poops twice a day or once a day at most. My family keeps saying water with meals causes reflux and digestion issues but I didn’t know this before. Will he be a reflux sufferer now 😭😭😭😭

Your family are wrong.
You can't cause reflux with water, it is an oesophagus muscle issue.
Water also helps with bowel movements.

Likely it is a temporary issue which can be solved.
Something like electrolytes being out of balance due to hot weather.

Try not to worry.

UpThereForThinkingDownThereForDancing · 31/07/2024 06:39

P.s If water with meals was a problem how would you explain water based meals like soup.

husbandcallsmepickle · 31/07/2024 06:40

Drinking water with meals absolutely does not cause any damage. Hiccups are a natural thing, my DS even had them regularly before he was born.

Octavia64 · 31/07/2024 06:43

Water with meals doesn't cause reflux.

Hiccups are normal to get. They usually
Go away quite quickly.

It's likely he has a stomach bug of some type.

I'm surprised he's got to two and not had one before!

Scottishshortbread11877 · 31/07/2024 06:48

Maybe it is an old wives' tale that drinking water with meals was not encouraged as it diluted the stomach acid slowing digestion. However stomach acid is pretty potent so I doubt 300ml of water would have diluted it to the extent it messed with digestion.

Parentingfullofworris · 31/07/2024 06:49

I am not really worried about the hiccups as much as the reflux. Something was coming up his throat and he kept swallowing it and crying. Happened like 4 times yesterday and then followed with hiccups. I spoke to his health visitor yesterday, she told me to call 111 if it happens again 😖 but I rather deal with his gp. I even tried to not offer water with his dinner yesterday but he was crying for his water so I gave only small amount but it still happened again

Has he ever been sick before?

If not it can be quite an unpleasant sensation.

Delphine31 · 31/07/2024 06:56

Water with meals is a good thing, definitely not a bad thing.

I wish I could get my DD to drink more especially in this heat!

The weather where I am in the UK at the moment is hot enough that it could make us feel unwell if we're not careful to keep cool and hydrated.

Nothing stranger than feeling a baby in the womb hiccuping is there? Mine did it constantly 😂

My family keeps saying water with meals causes reflux and digestion issues

Try to ignore your family members when they make wild assertions like this - stick to the NHS website and similar sources, or go to the health visitor drop in.

My dm is the same, for example when I was pregnant she told me drinking bottled water instead of tap water would help prevent UTIs.

They just don't consider that they can do real harm with their BS! You've got to be strong and ignore them, you're a mum now.

RedRobyn2021 · 31/07/2024 07:07

Water doesn't cause reflux, your family are wrong.

Footle · 31/07/2024 09:16

@Parentingfullofworris , you've done the opposite of damaging your child. You've taught him to love drinking water - that's one of the best things you could do for him.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/07/2024 09:18

It’s worrying that he cried for water because he was so thirsty. You really mustn’t withhold water!

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2024 09:22

Ignore your family.

It's actually very likely the water will help.

Constipation can cause reflux and if he hasn't opened his bowels as normal this may be the cause. Water will only help.

Also porridge (oats) can help as a great source of fibre.

So where did your family get their medical degrees?

How do you think millions, no billions, of people have managed to have water with their meals since time began?

Firecarrier · 31/07/2024 09:28

Please don't let your child get so thirsty they have to cry for water - that is more damaging that what you have described.

Seeline · 31/07/2024 09:32

You seem to be in a bit of a panic after one day of this!
Kids hiccup - it's normal
Not sure how you diagnose reflux but if it's just happened for one day, maybe he drank the water a bit quickly and swallowed some air, may be he has eaten something over the last 24 hrs that didn't agree with him, may be he ran around too much after a meal, may be he has a bit of a bug.
I'd wait a few days before rushing to the GP.

InfoSecInTheCity · 31/07/2024 09:46

People drink water with their meals all the time, it's a very standard practice, it's actually recommended to have water with your meal and we dont all spend every day hiccuping and with reflux.

If he's regurgitating a bit after eating then it sounds like he probably has a bit of a stomach bug, it could even just be that the heat is affecting his digestion. Sometimes if it's really hot then a heavy meal makes me feel a bit sick.

Keep offering water, it's good for him to stay hydrated, especially in warm weather and if he's not eating as much. Stick to light, easy to digest foods that won't make him feel too full.

Regarding the hiccups, unless he's been hiccuping for days without stopping, it's really not an issue. NHS suggests that you should speak to a GP if hiccups have been ongoing for more than 48 hrs.

Thank you all for your replies. He woke up and had oats with dates and milk
then 30mins later I juiced for him carrot celery and organs diluted with water. He seems ok
he even had a toast with jelly and peanut butter. I think I must have pankcimed for nothing. I even read reflux occasionally is ok. Thank you mums for making me come back to my sense 🙈

Thank goodness ! An organ smoothie sounded revolting 😂

Babyboomtastic · 31/07/2024 13:33

The worrying thing for me is not your little one was, but your extreme anxiety.

It sounds like he's had an afternoon of reflex/ feeling sick, drank some water and a tiny bit constipated. None of which are the sort of thing most people would be going straight to the health visitor and booking GP appointments for, rather than seeing if it resolves in a few days. It's also really hot, so it's not surprising if things like poo and drinking are a bit all over the place.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/07/2024 13:39

Op your anxiety sounds like it's through the roof?

You've not done anything wrong and i expect your little one was just having an off day.

You need to work on your anxiety.

Mumoftwo2022 · 31/07/2024 14:01

this is just Wow! You need to chill cos when your kid does have an illness you will be useless with the amount of worry you seem to have had over this. I wouldn’t even blink and eye lid at this

Superscientist · 31/07/2024 19:12

Constipation can trigger a little bit of reflux. When the bowel is full it takes up more room and pushes the stomach up. A bit like how in pregnancy you can get heartburn once baby is encroaching on your personal space.
My mum has problematic reflux and it is made worse when she has constipation as a side effects for some of her medication
