Broken wrist

In typical fashion my 5 year old broke his wrist yesterday when we leave for our summer holiday in a few days. He's currently in a plaster cast but might be moved to a 'soft' cast tomorrow or Monday.

Any advice on how we get around swimming and the beach?? I've ordered a bag thing to go over it, but do they actually work? If it's too tight he will likely refuse to wear it.

Does anyone know if there's any type of cast that I could push for that he would be able to swim in?

The top of the limbos are very tight and a kind of neoprene (wet suit) material. They worked really well when my daughter broke her leg for baths etc..... you have to just put it on carefully.

In the UK on the nhs they don't do waterproof casts. I have seen some in the USA, but not in the UK.

The beach with sand will not be advised. Can cause real issues with sand getting in the cast. It can cause abrasions as the sand and the cast rub together and this can cause an infection that you would see. Stay away from the beach even with a limbo on!

Are you flying? We’ve had 3 broken wrists, one was just before a flight, some airlines don’t like casts in case the limb swells so I managed to get my DC to be given a Velcro fabric and metal bar type support that can be loosened on a flight if needed. Wasn’t in the uk though.

We are flying. The airlines website says it's ok as long as it's been 48 hours since it was applied. This would be perfect though as at least we'd be able to wash his arm if he did get sand on it
