Baby oral thrush

Anyone's little one had oral thrush that cleared up on its own?

My 12 week old has had it since he was 2 weeks. We have been given Nystatin solution twice as the mouth gel is out of stock everywhere! I've been using thrush cream on my nipples after every feed consistently, even after he finished his treatment.
But it's just not budging.
It's not a bad case. Just a small patch on his tongue and doesn't affect his feeding. But I'm in discomfort and he has days where he is definitely more fussy on the breast because of it.

I really don't want to put him on the medication a third time!
I'm hoping there's a chance it could clear on it's own. Any advice?

TIA 🤍

Sorry, my experience was the opposite – absolutely needed medication to clear it with both children, and with DD2 that was the gel after two rounds with the liquid. (DD1 only ever had the gel for some reason.) Are you getting deep pain with it? If so, you may need tablets to shift it, not just the cream.

Yes I've heard the gel is super effective but unfortunately there is a nationwide shortage and no GPs are prescribing it 😢 I'm almost positive that if we had the gel it would shift it finally!
My pain was deep in the breast tissue but has improved and is now only occasional nipple pain. I did ask about the tablet but the GP said I wasn't able to take it while breastfeeding ... 😕

Very unfortunate about the gel! Is there any timeframe on it arriving?

I've had tablets (fluconozale, I think) twice whilst breastfeeding, so it must depend on your GP. If you're only getting occasional nipple pain now, though, that might not help anyhow.

Have you/he been swabbed recently and had it confirmed that it is definitely still thrush?

I don't think it will go away on its own. I got oral thrush from a steroid inhaler a few years back and it actually ended up spreading down my esophagus. It was a pretty horrible experience.

I did get the gel at the time which was very soothing. It's outrageous that you can't get it anymore.

Saw the GP again this afternoon for a follow up. She said it's unlikely to be anything else other than thrush but she has sought further advice from a specialist as to what to do next. She didn't want to swab without further advice.

I enquired about the gel again and stressed that we are willing to travel ANYWHERE 😩 But sadly she said they have no idea when it will become available (they are usually emailed this information)

Her advice: await reply from specialist and monitor the patch on his tongue. If it starts to spread, then he will have to have the Nystatin again 😔

Very disheartening!

My little one had oral thrush repeatedly until he was about 5 months old, we had over 10 prescriptions for nystatin. We would use it for week, I’d use the cream bought otc and then he would be ok for 3/4 days after finishing the course and then it would come back. The miconazole gel was also out of stock then too. He was swabbed to double check it was thrush had had blood tests to check his immune system.

The GP didn’t want to treat me as I wasn’t experiencing severe pain, but in the end a sympathetic GP agreed to prescribe me a course of anti fungal tablets along side baby having 2 back to back bottles of nystatin. That almost knocked it on the head but it didn’t fully clear until we started treating baby for reflux. Think having milk constantly sat in his mouth was feeding the candida and we were in a vicious circle.

Any signs of baby having reflux / silent reflux?
