16 Year Old Daughter Has Been Having Stomach Pain for 4 Months

My daughter is 16 and has been having stomach pain for the past 4 months now. She did have a UTI 3 months ago, but the doctor confirmed that the UTI had cleared up. Unfortunately, she is still having lower stomach pain, nausea, some constipation, and extreme fatigue. Her pain does not change due to eating or what she eats, but she does get a variety of level of pain from a 4-7. We. have seen 3 doctors now and they seem to think it's just in her head or constipation. Her diet does consist of mostly carbohydrates, however, during these 4 months that she has been ill, I have been able to get her to add cucumbers, broccoli, and apples to her diet, along with drinking more water. She does not have any change, she is still in pain. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? I have been researching online but nothing seems to fit. Please let me know if you have an ideas. My poor daughter just got her first job and I'm afraid she may not be able to work due to being in pain every day.

Has she been checked for coeliac disease?

Sheldoncoopersspot · 23/07/2024 03:21

My dd was exactly the same
She was given laxido for constipation which helped but she was still in pain so she had blood tests and the results came back that she was low in vitamin d so the doctor gave her vit d medicine for 8 weeks and she's been OK ever since. Also dd suffers with anxiety which causes her to have stomach pain.

Sounds a but similar to mine

I had IBS from around that age and carbohydrates were dreadful for it. On keto now and I never get a flare up. Would she eat clean low FODMAP for a week or two to check?

If you have been to the docs and to no avail, I would suggest a bit of trial and error with food intake, we had the laxido thing, dehydration and so on, we thought it might be gluten (no did not seem to be) but turns out it was dairy. I'm not completely convinced it is the total thing, but DD has oatmilk now and eats very little dairy and the issues have cleared. You have to give it a couple of weeks also of any home based trial you do. I suspect it is more of a thing than we give it credit for. Worth a try maybe ?

Ive been pondering whether to post or not as the last thing I want to do is put the fear of god into you and I mean that from the bottom of my heart but DO NOT allow your doctor to fob you off until you get to the bottom of it.We were fobbed off by different doctors for 10months with my son when he was 18,we were told it was just indigestion, IBS,gallstones,Appendicitis and food allergies amongst other things, they were literally scratching their heads and didn't know what was causing his pain.It turned out to be a worst case scenario for him and in no way am I saying it's the same for your daughter but just don't let them do nothing or brush her symptoms off.If you feel she isn't right take her back a million times if you have to until you get to the bottom of it.

They are so quick to push female adolescent pain as in their head.

My sister had gallstones as a teenager and it took 3 years, multiple hospital admissions and being a frequent flier at a and E to be diagnosed. It was only when she went into sepsis that they stopped assuming it was in her head.

Keep a detailed diary of food, symptoms and periods. Keep pushing the drs to run tests

Has she had a scan? When my daughter was 14 she had constant stomach pain and it turned out to be a very large ovarian cyst. As it happened, it was so large the GP could feel it (melon sized) but I wonder if a smaller one would have been as easy to diagnose.
