Hi, My 3 year old has been prescribed sodium feredetate
Low iron. She does not like the taste and it's going to be a struggle to take it 3 times a day for 3 months. Does anyone have any tips or know if it can be mixed with something else ? Thanks

It can be mixed with fruit juice, (not milk or cola)... There are three different brands, sytron, sodifer and feredat all are listed as either cherry or black cherry flavour. My pharmacy only has the first 2 which do smell different and are different colours so it might be worth seeing if you could swap brands. If that doesn't work how about speaking to whoever prescribed it and seeing if they could take Hariborange iron gummies (other types are available) instead? The normal dose of iron for a 3yo is 2.5ml three times a day, roughly 7mg of iron. 3 strawberry gummies have 7.5mg...

No idea why my comment has been hidden, I'd just made a couple of suggestions trying to help...

Hi OP,

You don't mention what brand it is but any kids vitamins I have used normally say whether they can be mixed or not with juice or milk. Since it's about low iron I wouldn't mix it with milk, though.

Have you read through the patient information leaflet to see if it suggests you mix it and with what?

Hi, It's Feredet prescribed by the doctor unfortunately there was no leaflet in the box and I didn't think about the taste when I picked it up. I will call doctor tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else had given this to a child. I may try orange juice

My son takes iron supplements which taste rank. We unashamedly use screen time. He knows he gets Miss Rachel for a few mins after each meal while we give him the iron and he literally doesn’t notice it.

I tried googling for a patient information leaflet but I couldn't find one for that brand. I am guessing you have inspected the box itself for any information on it?

If you have no luck getting through a doctor, try your pharmacy and see if they can advise or give you a patient information leaflet.

As a side note I came across a Sytron info leaflet and that one says that tea, coffee, milk, eggs, citric acid and ascorbic acid (vit C) may interfere with Sytron.
So the juice might be a no as well, but it could be brand dependent as Sytron and Feredet have a slight difference:

Feredet® and Sodifer® oral solutions contain sodium feredetate 38 mg/mL equivalent to
5.5 mg/mL elemental iron.
Sytron® oral solution contains sodium feredetate trihydrate 41.5 mg/mL equivalent to 5.5 mg/mL elemental iron.
