Let’s talk poo - 2 yo

DS just turned 2. On and off (maybe 5 days out of 7?) for the past 3 months he has had a big, loose (not diarrhea-loose but around 6 on the stool chart), stinky poo just as he wakes up. Over these 3 months he’s had generally gone on to have maybe one or two more poos in the day.

However in the past 3 weeks it’s been this absolutely ginormous loose poo first thing every single morning around half 6, then nothing for the rest of the day.
(He also digs his hand into his pooey nappy when he’s uncomfortable which is gross but I keep him in sleep suits to avoid this - unrelated to the actual poo issue!)

Is this huge loose poo first thing normal?! Is it likely to be a phase or developmental for his digestion - or should I start looking for intolerances? I’ve already tried giving him oat milk at bedtime to see if it was the anoure of cows milk and that didn’t seem to help.

We are hoping to start potty training soon but until we bottom this out (pardon the pun) I don’t want to even try.

Our DD (now aged 3.5) has toddler's diarrhea and it started like this. We went to GP to rule out coeliac etc. Tbh it hasn't really affected potty training, she is struggling with poos in the potty but we have invested in some heavy duty training pants which hold it all in!

Fingers crossed this passes quickly for your child whatever it is!

My DD is 2 and usually she has a massive morning poo. Usually it's loose too. I don't even take her out until she has pooed as it would be horrible to deal with the poo in shops etc.

My daughter developed toddler diarrhoea around aged 2. She has food allergies and one of the signs that indicated that it was toddle diarrhoea and not another allergy was that she pooed first thing in the morning and the poo contained indigested food.
There are a few dietary changes that can help. Increased fat, low fibre, avoid too many grapes, dried fruits and fruit juices. It might be worth a chat with your GP or HV. There's advice on toddler diarrhoea on the NHS pages.
