Urgent care OTT?

My DS 9 has come home from school today with an accident form, he fell over in basketball and bent his finger back, he's got a wet paper towel on it. I've set him up in his room with his tv on for a bit and given him calpol but when I went to check on him he burst out crying and said I've broken my finger. Personally I don't think he has but would I be totally OTT to take him to our local drop in centre it's not an A&E but they can do x rays.

@Cryingout1994 Not OTT at all. It's always important to get things checked out if you are unsure.

Thankyou I was planning on taking him as soon as OH gets in from work, any minute now

Not OTT but even if it is broken, they’ll probably only strap it to the next finger.

TitInATrance · 01/07/2024 16:09

Do go. I broke a toe and didn’t go ‘because they’ll only strap it’, less than a year on it’s quite deformed.

DS broke a finger when he was that age playing netball, got it seen to and it’s fine.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 01/07/2024 16:10

If it’s that bad it needs an X-ray. Could be torn ligaments, chipped bone. May simply need strapping, hopefully nothing more.

I would get that looked at (which is not something I say often!) Breaks in fingers need to be taken care of properly otherwise they might heal incorrectly.

No it's not OTT to seek a nd e support for something which is an accident and could be serious.

That's what it's designed for.

I hate that people feel they should no longer attend an accident unit - for an accident

maw1681 · 01/07/2024 18:47

Won't hurt to have it looked at. My mum did similar with her toe and didn't go because "they won't do anything " but eventually got x-rays and she'd broken a bone in her foot not a toe and she was in pain for months with it, if she'd gone straight away they would have had it in plaster and it would have healed faster

Bettedaviseyes111 · 01/07/2024 18:49

Not OTT bless him, he’s obviously finding it painful so better to get it checked out

zeromango · 01/07/2024 18:50

Definitely get checked OP I hurt my toe last week felt so stupid going in as NHS said they don't do anything for broken toes - turns out it was badly dislocated and they couldn't fix it manually so needed surgery with a wire inserted and now a 4/6 week recovery! If it's a simple fix then great but always worth getting checked out.

FawnFrenchieMum · 01/07/2024 18:57

Yes I would take him. We had no idea DS had a break in his hand and only took him to be x-rayed as he had dislocated two fingers and the paramedic said they needed to check they were re-aligned properly. They said it wasn’t healing right they would re break and fix so important to get checked even if they only strap it.

Cryingout1994 · 01/07/2024 21:15

Home now no break just badly bruised and they've strapped it up for him, it's his writing hand too so he's looking forward to not having to write the cheeky blighter😅a. Glad I went though always worth checking. Thankyou all
