My toddler is very lethargic, sleeping all day and hot to touch but with no temp. She’s displaying all her usual symptoms when she’s got a bug but she’s got no temp but to feel her she is burning up and calpol isn’t helping. She also can’t bear to have a cold flannel on her when usually she likes it when she has a temp. Is this normal?

How are you taking her temperature ?

Old fashioned trick but is she hot if you put your lips on her forehead ? Is her back hot ? As that would indicate a temperature

I always take her temp with the electric ear thermometer thing but it’s saying 36 degrees. Her back is very hot to touch :(

I would get her checked out. Our GP are always happy to check young children over when unwell.

Ignore the thermometer and trust your instincts, the tech can fail! You can feel she is hot. Get an underarm thermometer if you can if not get her checked. You as her parent are concerned which is reason enough for someone to check over a child so young. I can always tell by touch if mine have a temperature.

She’s definitely unwell and got a temp but im just confused why it’s not showing on thermometer. Is there such thing as like an internal temp? Maybe the fact it’s not showing is more dangerous? Usually when she’s ill with these symptoms & a temp I would just treat her at home with calpol, fluids, cold flannels etc but it doesn’t seem to be helping

probably be too late to get a same day appointment with the GP now so I’ll phone 111 today if she gets worse or GP tomorrow morning

I personally think your thermometer is broken and she has a temperature. I would proceed as you would if she has a temperature . The lethargy worries me . I would call 111 personally- if you call now you will get in the queue earlier to speak to someone

mumstheword001 · 01/07/2024 14:13

I think if her temperature ( if her back is hot then she has a temperature) isn’t been controlled with capol, then I would phone your GP now and see if they can fit you in. Like other pp have said they are normally really good, failing that I would suggest 111. Is your daughter drinking enough fluids? Dehydration is the worry in young children.

Nogodsnomasters · 01/07/2024 16:01

This absolutely sounds like she has a temperature and your thermometer is broken. When you say sleeping all day, how long? Is she waking to drink and peeing okay? I would honestly have her seen by someone today. She could be dehydrated.

DogwoodTree · 01/07/2024 16:18

what’s your temperature on the thermometer? You could try testing it. But I agree with PP, phone the GP or 111

Superscientist · 01/07/2024 19:48

I always check my temperature at the same time as my daughters

We had a thermometer that was not reading properly. Similar situation to you. She was hot but reading 36-37. Assuming it was a little out we just monitored. It wasn't improving and we went to the GP and her temperature was 40.6C and the thermometer said 36.8C! When we did ours they came back at 35.1C. we bought a new one that evening.

How is your little one doing, OP? Hope she’s feeling better today.
