Fever advice

My 7 mo had quite a bad cold earlier this week and had a raised temp for a day. He’s getting over the cold but now suffering quite badly with teething. I’m expecting his two bottom teeth to breakthrough any day now given how upset he is (he’s usually a very calm, chilled baby that rarely cries). The last 3 days he’s often been inconsolable once his pain relief starts wearing off.

He’s had a fever of 38.5 and 39 over the last two nigh which has been brought down by ibuprofen. Although I’m fairly certain this is caused by the teething, would it be an overreaction to take him to the GP if it spikes again tonight, given he was ill earlier this week and also had a raised temp then? My mum thinks I should take him but I thought the advice was to see a GP if there was a temp for 5 days in a row…

Just wondering what others would do!

It's a high temperature for teething. More likely due to infection. When I was a GP I'd have been more than happy to cast my eye over him. Children's conditions do fluctuate and even if I was happy on the first occasion I saw a child I'd always tell parents to bring them back if they were worried.

Bring him for sure. I doubt it's teething, I don't think it causes those kinds of temps at all. Best of luck.

I’d take him to the GP if he seems to be in so much pain.
My DS had tonsillitis quite a bit at that age and he always had a temperature for a few days and then it went but he was still in pain. He needed antibiotics each time.

Also teething doesn’t cause a fever They pick up more illnesses when they’re teething but they’re still illnesses like any other.

Are you alternating calpol and ibuprofen?

Areolaborealis · 30/06/2024 18:23

I would contact the GP because he's so little. Not a doctor but my mum experience is that when they're not well the temperature can be normal during the day then spike at night so he's maybe had the same thing brewing all week.

Calendulan · 30/06/2024 18:28

@DaughterNo2 Yes we’ve been alternating which helps a lot!

Thanks everyone - I’ll give them a call in the morning. My mum suggests I call the GP if he just sneezes, so wanted to do a temperature check (no pun intended) with this one.

Appreciate your quick replies :)

Def take him. Never known a temp with just teething. Some infection going on somewhere I would think.

Hello,

Just wondering how you got on at the doctors? Me and my partner have had a cough (not covid, we have tested) the past few days and yesterday my little one (8 month old) was crying, exhausted, wouldn't eat his food. He woke up this morning and had his milk ate all his food but I have given him calpol, his temp went to 37.2 but has now dropped, he's been a bit tired and clingy today but ate all food and drank all milk.. I think it is teething bug it's so sad to see them like this :(

@30mummy The doctor said it was likely just a viral infection. He broke out in a rash all over his body yesterday morning (still has it), which the doctor said was a common response to such an infection. No medication needed, just continue to soothe with pain killers etc at home. He actually seems over the worst of the illness now, still struggling with teething though.

Sorry that you’re going through something similar - it’s so draining! Don’t remember my first suffering this much with teething. I guess all kids respond differently. Hope things settle down for you soon - solidarity!
