My kids constantly ill - immunity vitamin recommendations

My DC 9, 7 and 2 are constantly ill with one thing or another. Each time one gets better the other gets something else and it passes around NON stop. The last 4 months we’ve had zero rest bite. We’ve had countless colds and coughs, temperatures galore, ear infections, throat infections, slapped cheek, hand foot and mouth, tummy bugs! All in such a short space of time.

I am desperately looking for recommendation for a high strength immunity boosting vitamins.

my 9 year old especially is struggling and has lost some weight with constantly being struck down and not being able to eat well.

Unless your children do not eat a balanced diet extra vitamins are not absorbed. Be aware it is possible to overdose on vitamins and some can be toxic when you take too high a dose.

My eldest definitely doesn’t eat a balanced diet. She’s extremely fussy and eats a very limited selection of foods. I’ve tried everything over the years to help her fussiness but nothing works as she’s so stubborn. Assume why she’s struggling the most now.

Children, especially young children get sick ALOT. We spent years going round in these circles.

If your worried about weight loss and their health get them to the Dr and get their bloods checked.

please be careful on immune boosting vitamins as for all you know their immune system can be doing this. Autoimmune diseases are very common.

My dd has recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, her immune system was attacking her body. Boosting her immune system is the last thing she needs.

Drs will dismiss child illness, you may have to push for testing.

Sambucol is great but not cheap. I feel your pain, same here. Day one of summer break and all sick. Again.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 29/06/2024 21:23

The only vitamin I would consider is vitamin d as people in the UK are often deficient due to lack of sun and it is helpful for immunity. Other than that encourage as healthy a diet as possible and try to limit sugary foods and upf.

How is their sleep?

Raaraab · 29/06/2024 21:38

Sambucol.

They need protein and vitamin c from food and vitamin d from vitamins and sunshine.
Lots of activity and fresh air

Hi,

We had this and I figured out that if I make 150g readybrek into biscuits every morning and give it to DS he becomes bulletproof.

My recipe is:

150g readybrek
1/2 tsp powdered ginger
make into a dough with apple juice

roll out flat between two layers of baking paper
cook in the oven for 30 minutes at 160C
turn over and cook for 5 more minutes

cut into squares.

Also works if you mix readybrek with milk, and then they get iodine from it too.

For the toddler you probably need more like 75g readybrek. You can figure it out from the RDA of the vitamins and the amount listed on the packet per 100g.

Good luck.

Make sure everyone washes their hands as soon as they walk into the house, before touching anything. It’s possible that some of it is due to the adults bringing in bugs they they are immune to but the children are not.

My DD (nearly 6) has only been ill once in an entire year! She takes sainsburys multivitamins. She spends a lot of time outside, eats plenty natural yoghurt (not sure if this makes a difference, but it's good for the gut) and enjoys getting dirty (I'm convinced this is good for kids' immune systems).

isthewashingdryyet · 29/06/2024 22:24

Get a multivitamin for kids from the supermarket, they are often chewable for kids.
Not sure you need anymore than this.

hand washing often is also a really good idea too

I'd push for getting iron levels tested. My 7 Yr old son has dipped low with iron several times and that's when he gets all the fevers ef earache and tonsillitis. When he's on a supplement things get better. Also, he's prone to get bugs via swimming but a wet suit seems to have helped (water was particularly cold at the pool!) I also think some kids are more susceptible to get bugs from pools than others. Good luck
