Scared to give 2 month old omeprazole

My 11 week old has had a really tough time
He's screamed since birth
He's clearly in a lot of pain
At first we tried colic cow and gate milk; with colic drops and infacol
Then we went on to nutrimigen but that made him worse as soon as he had the first bottle and we ended up admitted to hospital with dehydration
Then we were given neocate milk
He's still been screaming a lot, always after feeds is an hour of screaming
We were then given gaviscon yesterday and this again made him 10 times worse he screamed all night last night (he normally sleeps well just screams all day
Gp gave us omeprazole this morning but I'm just scared to give him anything new at this point, things seems to be making him worse

He's had his tongue tie cut, he's had osteopath appointments weekly, he's pace fed, he poops once a day missing the odd day

Will omeprazole possibly make him worse ?

The GP had prescribed it and would only do so if they thought it would help. It'll reduce the stomach acid. I've had it as an adult and it massively helped me.

Yes I am taking it now. We thought it was gallstones but the doctor said to try the omeprazole first and it was almost instant, started to work the first day. Went from rocking in pain in tears to nothing.
I know I have no experience with giving it to babies but it is good stuff. Try it. It cannot do any harm.

If he's got reflux. He needs it.

If he's got reflux. He needs it.

He doesn't actually have the symptoms of reflux but he's always screaming so we are trying to eliminate things, that's why I'm abit wary, sorry I should of mentioned that in my post

Screaming is a symptom of reflux, it can be really painful for them. It's a very safe drug. We give it all the time to tiny babies.

DD got given this when younger, constant screaming is a sign of reflux. It was like she was suddenly transformed into a different baby, it worked wonders.

hobbledyhoy · 29/06/2024 07:28

I should have said we also went through all the colic drops, infacol and gaviscon with none of it working but omeprazole did. It won't do any harm to try.

Mine had reflux, omeprazol bunged my baby up and made pooping uncomfortable but helped with the reflux. Sort of a catch 22 - should we help the reflux but create tummy problems?! We stopped giving it. Baby grew out of the reflux by 5/6 months. Mine wasn't on formula so I can't comment on trying any particular formulas to help either!

Michellebops · 29/06/2024 07:39

Sounds like silent reflux rather than reflux.
Please give the medicine, it will alleviate the pain your baby is in.

Trust the medical professionals

Do it. If they have silent reflux like my dd had, it will help. Mine became a different baby within days of getting the omeprazole. So much more settled and happy. She was on it from 3 months to about 10 months. No ill effects. She is 2.5y now.
I only wish I had a gp that interested. I had to fight and eventually go private to get our prescription.

Good luck!

My daughter is 4 in a few weeks and has been on omperazole since 8 weeks old.

The amino acid formula, which neocate is, are very thin and even without previous symptoms of reflux they can trigger reflux. They often need thickeners such as gaviscon and/or a ppi such as omperazole or lansoprazole which reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.
It can take a few weeks to settle so you do have to ride it out and it can get worse in the first week as the body can produce more acid to counter the demand to produce less.
My daughter has particularly stubborn reflux and needed the highest dose to see the effects
Her main reflux symptoms was screaming. She also has multiple food allergies. She couldn't have neocate as she has a coconut allergy too. She was on alfamino instead which is another good amino acid formula if you find that neocate isn't right for your little one.
My daughter got constipation from the gaviscon and for the first few months she needed a stool softener to help her poo
