When my little ones have had this the strawberry tongue was much much redder but I'm just a mum not a dr!

@Fooshufflewickjbannanapants ah ok, thanks ! I wasn’t sure as I have never seen this white coating on her tongue like this before! Tonsils are very red and inflamed also

Doesn’t look red enough for strawberry tongue- it’s normally literally strawberry red, hence the name. hope they feel better soonxx

Water246 · 27/06/2024 12:16

I've seen that in my children before and it was strep. I wonder if it can be brighter red if it has been there longer. You should definitely get them checked. Mine started improving immediately after starting antibiotics.

Mairzydotes · 27/06/2024 12:27

It could be the early stages. It might get more red in the next day or so.

Does the skin on her body or arms feel rough?

kaceylacey938 · 27/06/2024 12:28

@Water246 thanks this is my worry she’s had it twice before this too and both times different symptoms .

Her tonsils look very red and so sore so was hard to tell if it was viral or not but this white on the tongue isn’t something she usually has. She is refusing to eat and drinking is painful and constantly having to keep her mouth open as it’s causing her pain to swallow. Temp has been so persistently high reaching 40 over the past three days….It’s so worrying our gps or local hospital don’t usually test for it either. My other little one also has had a persistently high temperature for three days that keeps returning and is refusing most food (not verbal to tell me anything yet)

@Mairzydotes no DD doesn’t but my DS does have a spotty rash all over he’s back that I thought was heat rash from having such a high temperature so I’m wondering if that’s related now

Both are extremely lethargic sleeping 16 hours through the night and having lots of naps throughout the day too

The spotty rash does sound like the scarlet fever rash. If the temperature has been up to 40 I think it indicates they may need antibiotics, but I'm not medical. I don't hesitate - I just get them to a GP. It's their job to assess if they need treatment. Have you got an appointment with your GP? You could also ring 111 because they can either deal with it or tell the gp surgery to see to see them. You can fill in the 111 form online too. Hope you get them seen soon. x

@Water246 thanks yes I have taken them in and now both are on antibiotics …my DS seems much better all of a sudden (unsure if it’s because he’s breastfed and has been on me non stop) but my daughter is no different and very high persistent temperature :(

Glad you got antibiotics! I think it can take a few doses to see improvement. Hope they are better soon!
