7 month old with a temp of 39 and vomiting medicine back up!

Our 7 month old has come down with a temperature which is currently sitting at bang on 39. I’ve just tried to give her ibuprofen but she vomited it back up in hysterics.

She does have a rash but as does my 3 year old (also poorly). It fades when pressed and she’s had it for a few days. At first I thought it was heat rash but perhaps not.

How can I calm her when we can’t give her anymore medicine?

Ring out of hours x

SummerSnowstorm · 27/06/2024 00:51

Ring 111, 39 is OK but if she can't keep medicine down to lower it I would be concerned about it creeping up to convulsion level, especially at that age.

If 111 don't direct you to take her to OOH then ring gp first thing for an appointment as it could be bacterial and need antibiotics

Have they had any paracetamol? Not useful info for tonight, but you can buy paediatric paracetamol suppositories from pharmacies which are handy when kids are vomiting. Are they both vaccinated for measles? That is going around currently. Sips only if vomiting, no large gulps of fluid.

Udford · 27/06/2024 00:59

@JC03745 No paracetamol. We only have ibuprofen in at the moment. I didn’t know you could buy those from pharmacies, I’ll definitely be hunting those down tomorrow! Thank you!

Yes they’re both fully vaccinated.

I’ve tried her with some milk but she wasn’t interested so we’ll start to syringe feed fluids I think given the heat.

For a fever she needs paracetamol rather than ibuprofen, has she had that?
Also if you’re concerned, please just call 111 instead of waiting for mumsnet replies.

Udford · 27/06/2024 01:11

@MariaVT65 She hasn’t, we don’t have it in and the NHS website states either paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used.

Edited

Febrile convulsions are something that will either happen or not (most children don't get them). There is a misconception that there's some specific temperature threshold children should be kept below, or that antifever medicines can prevent them but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Around 4% of children have one at some point. It can be any level of fever over 38 but higher (39.5 +) is generally the ones we see, and I would hazard a guess that ones who are slightly below that have dropped on the way in given the timescales for paracetamol or Ibuprofen to reduce fever.
They're far from uncommon, and whilst generally not dangerous it's not a pleasant experience, for the parents especially.

That is not entirely accurate. Without knowing the cause of the fever it is entirely appropriate to alternate doses of each.

But anyway op you will be best placed to call 111 for advice.
