Chicken pox or hand foot and mouth?

my 18 month old developed blister type spots on Monday evening, yesterday and today more have appeared on legs, arms, hands, feet and a couple by his mouth. DR confirmed chicken pox, however he has none on his back/torso so now I’m thinking could this be hand foot and mouth? he has has had no temp, hasn’t been off his food or drink and seemed a lot like himself apart from the spots?!

They look poxy to me. Very fluid filled

Sanch1 · 26/06/2024 22:10

I would say HFM based on your description. All my kids chicken pox started on the torso and they had it all over.

MissingKitty · 26/06/2024 22:11

Looks like chicken pox

CelesteCunningham · 26/06/2024 22:13

That picture looks like the pox, but nothing on the torso would make me think HFM.

Our GP said to check the scalp, as only chickenpox crosses the hairline.

Thanks for the replies, it’s so hard to tell as they can look so similar, I guess the treatment is the same whichever it is, I might take him back to the gp as I would just like to know for sure so I know If I still need to expect chicken pox or not in the near future 😂

Those spots look like chickenpox to me. One question: does DC have spots on the soles of their feet or palms of their hands? My understanding (not a medic but DS has had numerous bouts of HFM) is that spots on palms or soles of feet are typically only caused by HFM

SpindleyDindley · 26/06/2024 22:29

Generally HFM keeps only to those specific parts of the body.

Hopefully you mean just a phone appointment! Don’t no spreading it around whatever it is. I hope they feel better soon OP

Sometimes, you have to take them to the doctors, even with infections like this. I had to with my youngest because his spots were infected and they required antibiotics. Something the doctor wouldn’t diagnose over the phone

Agreed, but that isn’t the case here currently.

Yes he has them on the palms of his hand and the soles of his feet, he keeps stamping his feet I guess to itch them bless him. This is what I was thinking about HFM!

I will call the GP surgery like I did the other day and sent pictures across, however if they ask me to go in as they want to check him over then I shall be doing that. Thanks

Yeah I wasn’t suggesting you ignore medical advice if they request to see him. I was suggesting virtual appointment was better when you want to double check so you can know if chicken pox is still coming, im glad they were able to do that for you!

I would say HFM then but I'm not a medic.

Legs is one of the common places to get the blisters, it's not literally just the hands, feet and mouth. It's often also legs, nappy area, and sometimes arms too.

dementedpixie · 27/06/2024 09:52

CP doesn't usually appear in soles of feet/palms of hand. HFM often appears on legs and nappy area.

I'd say probably HFM given where his spots are

Rainbow2023 · 27/06/2024 10:00

Sent pics over to the GP this morning and she said she’s confident it’s chicken pox however it’s very hard to tell as they are so similar so I’m still none the wiser really 😂 thanks everyone for the comments
