Oral Thrush 8 week old

Hi everyone,

I thought I would take to here, as I am at witts end, I have no idea what else to do and feel completely useless to my baby.

My little one has got oral thrush she's just over 8 weeks old, there's currently a shortage in the UK of miconazole oral gel, so I cannot get hold of it anywhere, so we were prescribed nystan 30ml liquid. However my little one absolutely hates it to the point she will hold her breath and then throws it back up, I have no idea what to else to do, I can't keep giving it to her and watching her hold her breath, it's horrible.

We've tried just giving the 1ml dose in one lot and then we've also tried doing little bits at a time, but neither are working.

She's now struggling to have her bottle as the thrush has spread to the cheeks of her mouth, and with the heat we're due to have this week, we're getting very concerned.
Weve already spoken to our GP surgery last week who just advised there is nothing else they can prescribe due to her age.

Any advice is greatly appreciated !

Im currently on our second prescription of this for my 11week old as one lot wasn't enough to clear her thrush. Are you syringing it straight into her mouth? I was advised by our lactation consultant to syringe the 1ml into a clean pot / ramekin, dip a clean finger in the mixture and then use your finger like a paintbrush to paint it over little one's tongue, cheek, gums, palate etc. It obviously takes a few goes each time, but DD is tolerating this very well and its a bit like a game for her? And she seems to be happier with a finger in her mouth rather than a syringe.

Are you being treated with the daktarin cream at the same time?

Thank you so much for this advice, we weren't advised anything just to syringe in it, and I kept saying as she throws it straight back up surely it's not doing the job it's meant to! We will try this going forward thank you so so much!

I just did the syringing method with our first prescription as noone told me. Then the thrush came back. Our LC said it probably hadnt cleared from the back of the tongue. Halfway through our current course trying this new method and it does seem to be going better!

Sorry I know this is an old thread but just wanted to know if the finger method worked for you OP? my DS is currently on round two of dyastin and it doesn’t seem to be clearing up. I have been trying a cotton swab for some doses but haven’t tried my finger.

Not the OP, but finger method worked loads better for us!
