Mucus in poo

Hi Mums, my DD has been having mucus filled poo for 5 days now, with stomach cramps, and has been going to the bathroom 8 times a day. She's gets stomach cramps when she eats that lead to a mucusy bowle movement. She hasn't had a fever or felt unwell apart from the pooing. Started happening the day after we went to the hospital for something else.

Im getting really worried now as it doesnt seem to be settling.

Have anyone been through something similar with their son or daughter. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like some kind of bug. I would ring 111 op for further advice.

My dd was like this when her diet was very dairy heavy.

Hi Op, my daughter had this and she did actually have coeliac disease. I would speak with your GP and ask for a stool sample (to rule out any gut infection / virus) and blood test if stool sample is clear and symptoms are still ongoing.

Thanks MrsBillyhargrove, we have sent a poo sample to the lab, waiting for results.
Re Coeliac, can this appear all of a sudden? till now my DD has suffered from cronic constipation, so this is a complete U turn.

My dd was like this when her diet was very dairy heavy.

Mine was the same. She was also grumpy all the time. I cut out dairy (was BFing) and she was a lot happier.

Thanks Barefootsally, shes been on diary since birth. Is it possible for a diary allergy to appear suddenly?

Coeliac disease is usually dormant in the stomach and triggered by an illness / stress episode. My DD had a horrible vomiting bug which in turn led to other issues (heartburn, headaches, the mucus in poo, stomach issues) and then she was eventually diagnosed with coeliac. I hope it’s not coeliac for your DD.

Going on from your last post, I suspect it’s the dairy causing issues. I would stop all dairy for the moment (a couple weeks if possible) to let her stomach heal. Hopefully symptoms subside and you can gradually reintroduce dairy into her diet without issue.

thanks MrsBillyhargrove, may i ask how old your DD was when this happened.

DS had a similar issue, dairy protein was the problem.

yoyomum2024 · 16/06/2024 11:54

thanks kitchenhelprequired, Aimee has been drinking milk and eating yogurt all her life and she is 5 now. Can a diary allergy show up all of a sudden?

if it is dairy protein then soy protein can cause the same issues

kitchenhelprequired · 17/06/2024 07:05

@yoyomum2024 yes, allergies or intolerances can show up at anytime. Allergies UK told me the gold standard was food elimination. Remove all dairy, read every label and understand the different names for all dairy. Try 3 weeks with absolutely none. Then give lactose free products. The Dr my son saw was convinced the issue was lactose (allergy tests don't show an actual allergy) but within a couple of days of having lactose free milk and no other dairy all the same symptoms returned so we knew the issue was dairy protein.
