Whooping cough or something else?

For a little background, I have an 8 year old DS who is non-verbal autistic with severe learning difficulties. This presents lots of challenges when he becomes poorly.

Over the past 11 days, he has absolutely been through the mill - we have had daily fevers, always in the afternoons, and he always falls asleep with them. Calpol reduces the fever initially, at which point he perks up again, but then, we’re back to square one the next day.

He has also been coughing throughout. It’s a very productive cough with lots of phlegm (sorry TMI), and he has vomited as a result of it numerous times.

Aside from that, his appetite has been pretty poor, and he doesn’t want to do a lot of the things he usually does.

We went to see our GP on Friday, who prescribed antibiotics, as a precaution due to the prolonged fever. Some of the antibiotics have not been kept down, because of the coughing.

I feel completely at a loss, as he has never been like this before. I have also read about the current increase in whooping cough cases, and a lot of DS’s symptoms seem to line up. I’m mostly concerned about how long the fever has continued for.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Whooping cough is dry and has a very distinctive sound, and continuous.

me, dd and ds have all been struck down with a horrendous virus this week with all the symptoms you describe. Somethings really doing the rounds.
Hope he gets better soon Op
