4 yo sickness & diarrhoea, when to start worrying?

My 4 year old had sickness on Friday, that stopped and then diarrhoea started yesterday 😖 literally water coming out. I did speak to 111 yesterday evening because I was worried and the doctor said it just sounds like gastroenteritis and to care for him at home as he's still drinking and weeing etc.

Last bout of diarrhoea was 7am today, he's eaten bits and pieces and been drinking water, seemed to have perked up slightly (no fever since Saturday night) and now he's suddenly started pooing liquid again 😭 been about 5 times.

I'm trying to get dioralyte in him but he hates it even coming from a syringe it makes him gag so I'm struggling.

I'm just so worried he's going to become dehydrated, I'm getting him to drink as much water as possible, he doesn't really want to eat again because his belly hurts, and he's all tired and up and down. He's been unwell with this bug since Friday afternoon, been up and down with energy and feel okay/feeling rubbish.

Is it normal for the diarrhoea to stop for a good couple hours (in this case 8ish hours) and then come back?
I really thought he was getting better 😓

Norovirus is really bad at the moment, you should really try and get as much dioraltyte as you can down him and feed small amounts of bland food like rice, soup or bananas. Unfortunately you’ve just got to wait until it gets out of his system, which hopefully won’t be much longer. They say flat coke is good, I suppose it’s the sugar in it, but needs to be flat.

Don't worry to much about not eating for a while. The important thing is fluids. Dioralyte tastes awful so if not tolerating then any fluids are fine. Apple juice quite good. Diarrhoea can stop and start so again this is normal. Ensure passing urine and lips remain moist. Sounds very like simple gastroenteritis and will settle after about 5-7 days.

Diarrhoea and vomiting

Diarrhoea and vomiting are common in adults, children and babies. Find out how to treat and avoid spreading them, and when to get medical help.

Thank you for your comment, I did actually give him diluted apple juice and he drank some and then literally 5 minutes later the diarrhoea started again, I'm not sure if the apple juice could have caused that so quickly? And thank you Im hoping we're over the worst of it now
