On holiday child ear infection

In need of urgent advice. Child (5) has become really poorly on the final night of our holiday in Portugal with ear pain. He's sleeping but in between that crying. We're giving him calpol.

We fly at 11am tomorrow and I'm wondering what on earth to do. Do I delay the flight?

Any advice much appreciated!

Our son had an ear infection on holiday last year but thankfully it happened mid way through. He was given antibiotics and stronger pain relief from the hotel GP but we were warned that if it didn’t clear up it could be risky to fly. Thankfully we had a few days to go and he was ok. You really need to seek medical help before you fly as I believe it could result in a burst ear drum. It doesn’t sound like you have any time left before you head to the airport! Is there a hotel GP or emergency doctor you can see? Or speak to your holiday rep for advice?

I’ve realised you say “tomorrow” about your flight and I read it as being today so in just a few hours. Definitely seek medical advice asap.

Bring him to a walk in clinic and get him see asap.
You don't want the eardrum to rupture on the flight if the infection is very bad

Portugal is usually very good for medicines etc.
maybe even bring him to a pharmacy - usually they can give things that are normally prescription over the counter

Thank you so much everyone. He's feeling much better after 4 hours sleep. Now I'm in two minds - do we fly or not! Leaving at 9am for flight 😩

I wouldn’t risk flying until he’s been seen by a medical professional. I think if it did rupture on the plane it can lead to permanent damage which is not worth risking.

Agree! We're seeing a doctor this morning and delaying! Thank you. He's all bright and happy now too! Hopefully it was some awful earache but best to be safe xx
