Mystery illness ? Help ?

Mamatothetots · 27/05/2024 17:18

We have a case of a mystery illness with my 17 month old

Symptoms
Pale yellow almost white stool- a lot of mucus in with it
Random bouts of crying - takes a long time to stop him
Off food - used to eat big amounts now will barley touch meals
Highly Irritable

The pale poop has been for almost 3/4 months
And the other symptoms have started in the past month

I've been to the GP on 5 separate occasions
And she just says oh it's probably the medication he is on
However he only started Azythromycin 2 months ago ( he takes this due to a condition he has )
I have to constantly remind my sons doctor that the medication isn't whats causing it but she just says this will go soon
She said that " if it was anything serious then other symptoms that present in those conditions would have shown by now " and then she tells me NOT to go to a&e because this is not an emergency
I feel like I'm being fobbed off
She hasn't even ordered a single test to look into things

Trying to seek other advice as to what this could be from other parents/carers ,has anyone experienced this or anything similar ?, I feel absolutely shattered and heartbroken seeing my baby not himself

Obviously, could be many things but…. Has he been tested for coeliac disease? Sounds like my little one before she got her diagnosis…

Riverlee · 27/05/2024 17:23

My first thought was a food intolerance or coeliac, especially as he’s gone off food, so maybe he’s subconsciously has linked his discomfort to food.

I b don’t think it’s an an and e matter, but does need investigating. Can you speak to another go o? Or practice manager to get the tests initiated.

How can you be confident that the symptoms that appeared in the last month aren't side effects of the medication?
Is the medication due to stop soon?

He's not been tested for a single thing , I've asked for an appointment with a different GP just so I can get a second opinion and some testing just so we can get the bottom of things .
I will definitely ask about that and do a little reading up myself
Thank you for your reply 🙏

What condition is he taking the Azythromycin for? That's quite relevant.

RolaColaLola · 27/05/2024 17:29

Why is he taking the azithromycin? Could it be the same condition that necessitates the azithro is also driving the unusual stools?

What does the paediatrician say? If he’s taking regular azithro I’d assume he’s under Paeds somewhere?

mayaknew · 27/05/2024 17:39

What's his skin like ?

My initial thought is CMPA

He has immunosuppression and respiratory issues- not sure what condition is causing it . the pediatric respiratory team he is under at SGH are now working with GOSH as they belive it could be a rare/ new condition .
My son has had many episodes of getting ill and going into respiratory failure , he has been in a coma on ventilator 3 times this year due to it. They have put him on the meds to see if they help lessen the hospitalisations as he has been inpatient on chilrens ward over 16 times since last October

I spoke with his team at his last appointmwnt and they said that in there opinion it's not the medication .

I think your paediatric team should be taking this on rather than expecting the GP to work things up from scratch. Does he have a local paediatrician or only specialists based somewhere else?

Your child has a potentially rare and new condition that super-experts are struggling to put a finger on, it seems unlikely they can be that sure these are unrelated symptoms!

The azithro could have made any gastro issues feel worse, diarrhoea is a really common side effect. I'm wondering if he could have has a bug then the azithro side effects kicked in. But agree with pp this needs to be considered by your hospital team. Don't bother with gp, be really clear about how symptoms are impacting on quality of life for him. I assume he passed everything they test newborns for in UK?
