Blood (lots) in 4 yr old stool

Hi all, I’m really freaking out. My DD is 4, about to be 5, and for the last week she has been passing significant amounts of blood with her stool. She has had a long history of constipation , and a couple of episodes in the past, but it’s been small amounts and presumed caused by an anal fissure. This is different- visible blood in the toilet water and some clumps when wiping 🥺. I called 111 on Sat but they weren’t too worried and just prescribed a laxative (which never arrived at the pharmacy). GP isn’t open until tomorrow morning, but she’s passed a load more just now and I’m freaking out. She isn’t in pain but just before she went to the loo I saw she was clutching her lower stomach. I asked her if she was in pain and she said no but it’s “hot”. She said something similar last week… any ideas ? Thanks for reading 🙏🏻

Id say a tear if she says it's hot it'll be stinging

probably still the fissure. see the GP to get proper laxatives (Movicol) and keep a close watch on the constipation. this can take a LONG time to heal (5 years for my DD) and needs careful support to avoid impaction and worse issues.

Thank you both for your replies, that has reassured me a little .

@parietal when you say impaction and worse issues- are there things to look out for in particular?
What symptoms did your DD have if you don’t mind me asking?

thank you 🙏🏻

Don’t panic. I know it’s easier said than done! My 3 year old had this for a few months - ended up with an A&E trip after a frightening amount of blood. Turned out it was constipation and likely a slightly swollen vein or similar that was being disturbed by hard stools.

In our case it stopped quite suddenly after we cut out full fat cow’s milk, which was what was causing his constipation.

@CatStoleMyChocolate thanks so much for sharing your experience, that makes me feel a lot better <3. My DD also drinks milk, it has occurred to me that that could be part of the issue. X
