ITP (low platelets) in toddler

Has anyone had any experience of ITP in a 2 year old?

My daughter has been diagnosed with ITP because of more bruising than normal. First blood test showed platelets at 40 and then a follow up blood test a month later showed they were 61. We've been told no treatment and she's otherwise healthy. The consultant was quite relaxed and said no more blood tests just let it run its course and it will get better.

However, nursery seem suspicious despite having all the Drs letters and keep wanting to monitor all her bruises. They are making me feel like there's something more wrong. I know they have to monitor for safeguarding incase we are causing the bruises but it's just the way they seem horrified at the low platelet numbers despite a consultant reassuring us.

Wondered if anyone's child has had ITP and if so what you did about it? How you managed it and did it just get better? It's clearly taking its time but the platelet numbers are rising.

Would appreciate any of your experiences.

So my son used to have episodes of thrombocytopenia when he was younger and he used to come up in a meningitis style rash every time. It generally happened when he was poorly with something else (he had other medical issues that we had to take him into hospital for even if generally unwell).

I pushed for him to be seen regularly as my ex husband has blood clotting issues and it turns out that my son (and ex) have a genetic mutation which means that they generally have low blood platelets. We’ve just had our annual appointment and his platelets were the low end of normal.

Yes my son does bruise easily and his nose bleeds last a while although they’re not heavy, but other than that it doesn’t cause him any problems at all.

My 8 year old son was diagnosed with ITP in March - platelet count then was 2, now 14. Normal range is 150-400.
I’ve found it extremely stressful. Children with ITP have to be careful with knocks to the head/ chest because they are at greater risk of internal bleeding.
We’ve been in and out of hospital most weeks since diagnosis but it sounds like your daughter’s levels are on the rise. 🤞🏼
