My dd8 has had this nasty patch of eczema for months. On the back of her leg. It will dry up then suddenly get red and inflamed and itchy. We are currently limiting cows milk as we
Believe from some private tests she does have a slight intolerance. But this current patch will just not go even after all I try with doctors prescribed steroid cream and emollients which we use religiously
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on helping clear this up properly please ? Thanks xx

No but watching as my DS has the same!
I've used the hydrocortisone ointment prescribed by GP, it clears it up then after a few days of not using it. Its back again. And I don't want to keep putting it on I've read it's not good for them.

We use antihistamine medecine and make sure he’s very hydrated. We use Roche posay lipikar for a wash and cicaplast to calm down followed by moogoo. Hugs op, it’s a nightmare

We’ve been using aveeno for years with DS but recently some really sore patches on his legs just weren’t shifting. I got some QV cream and it reduced the angriness overnight. Within 2-3 days it had all but gone.
I also saw someone on social media using zinc bandages on their baby but I haven’t resorted to these yet as I’ve not done any research on them and they sound quite heavy duty.

Thanks for replies x Her dad has suffered all his life and he's 40 to the point where it itches so bad and then it bleeds but he doesn't do much about his 🙄 but I don't want to see her suffer so much.
I know it's hereditary and it's not going to go anywhere anytime soon unfortunately.

I've seen these adverts for miracle cure creams etc but I'm always sceptical to try x

I've had eczema for almost 50 years - use steroids when it's bad and have muddled through with emollient the rest of the time. Someone recently suggested a product called migh-tea moisture balm from a brand called Dhelicous and am really impressed with it - it calms and softens the skin. Not quite a miracle cure but it has made a significant difference.

They do a mint- tea one as well, which is fabulously refreshing/cooling on my peri- Meno skin.

Ds gets eczema on the backs of his knees. For ages nothing was working because he would itch so much overnight in his sleep. In desperation one night I pulled on adult sized (so not very tight) tubular bandages after putting on aveeno lotion. It helped clear it up surprisingly fast.

SpringBunnies · 16/05/2024 22:45

It’s hereditary and likely it’s not food related. I have eczema and DC2 has it. We have seen a dermatologist and have prescription from that which the GP can do repeats on. Dermatologist says if it’s just in the folds it is typical hereditary eczema. Food related ones are typical all over the body.

What steroids are you prescribed? If it’s not clearing, it’s too weak. Hydrocortisone is very weak. The GP can prescribe Eumovate if you ask. DC also has Eolocon but that was from the dermatologist. She’s also prescribed protopic (which isn’t a steroid) for longer term use. Also we were told to keep using it after it cleared for bit longer because the skin might not be inflamed on the surface but still underneath. But mainly using stronger steroids means we can use it for 5 days or so and it clears.

Emollient only helps if there are no flare ups.

What I wrote here is only applicable if you have bad eczema. If yours clear with just hydrocortisone and emollient, then it’s not serious!

SpringBunnies · 16/05/2024 22:49

For emollients DC uses CeraVe moisturising cream and me Isomel Gel. But the inflammed skin won’t clear with just emollients, at least for us.

cherrytree2 · 16/05/2024 23:27

Thanks @SpringBunnies
I paid out of desperation for an allergy test which looked like. Radio wave machine & cows milk came out as an allergy. She did have a cows milk allergy as a baby but was weaned onto cows milk at 12 months old and has had on off flare ups over the years. I'm not 100% if this test was very accurate
So we have only ever been treated with different emollients over the years cetraben diprobase & zero base etc, all tried
.
Currently also using 1% hydrocortisone when the patch is bad as you can see or not calming or clearing but that's been like it for months it's not strong enough and hasn't touched it. So I'm going to be asked to be referred to dermatology I think and request that emotiuve u suggested forgive my spelling !
I'm willing to try anything. She now has small patches on her face too, eyelids and around the mouth Sad

Oh if it’s on her face then you need a dermatology referral. GP doesn’t recommend steroids on the face. That’s what the Protopic is prescribed for and it’s only from dermatologist. Ask what the waiting time is for NHS dermatology is like in your area. We have insurance via work and went private (but referal from NHS GP). The wait was still 3 months.

The dermatologist said she would refer for skin and metal allergy tests if DC didn’t respond to steroids but she did. So they won’t rule out allergies.

SpringBunnies · 17/05/2024 06:16

Just to add you got referred because DC started have rashes around her eyelids and mouth too.

Ilovefatrascals · 20/05/2024 17:33

Although it might sound counter intuitive, sometimes putting on no emollients/creams can help. It will feel very dry and uncomfortable initially but then goes to flaky which is a sign that the skin is healing and learning to produce its own moisture. Please research "topical steroid withdrawal" before using steroids. My daughter had eczema as a toddler and used the steroids prescribed by the doctors and is going through topical steroid withdrawal

MitMopse · 20/05/2024 17:58

My daughter now nearly 11 has suffered from the same since babyhood, sometimes very severe and requiring antibiotics. What has worked for us to control it is the hydrocortisone cream (apply each day for a week at a time then break for a couple of weeks) followed by ZeroAQS emollient (she is allergic to others). Slap that stuff on every day!
I hope you get success it's such a horrible thing to have x
