2yo knocked a tooth out

Looking for advice and a bit of a hand hold after a very stressful day! My youngest DC managed to knock a tooth out this morning while playing outside. Usual dentist was closed so ended up ringing 111, a few hours in urgent care, then ending in heading to A&E. Bit of a wild goose chase but nothing unmanageable and silver lining is his mouth, jaw and gums are all okay and still intact.

Thankfully I've managed to get DC into a different dentist for an emergency dental appointment tomorrow AM. Now, I know the tooth isn't salvageable at this point (although it is intact with root and all) but I'm wondering if anyone else has ever experienced a premature tooth loss with their DC and have suggestions on what I should be asking tomorrow?

Quick Google tells me there's something called space maintainers that can help prevent DC's teeth from becoming misaligned? I'm worried their little smile is going to end up like something out of The Hills Have Eyes 🥲

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Spent the day in a blood stained top with a hungry, grouchy 2yo and now in need of a strong drink!

I knocked both my front top teeth out when I was little. (Not sure if I was 2 or 3, but definitely pre-school).
My adult teeth are fine.

Sorry to hear this.

DD2 knocked her front upper tooth out falling face first onto concrete when she was 2. The tooth came out whole. From what I recall dentist done an xray to check the socket was clean of any tooth remnant and that there was no damage to any new tooth buds (if that's what they are called)

No spacers needed, not that they were mentioned. Just a very long period of having no front tooth until the adult tooth came in. I didn't notice other teeth shifting and the adult tooth didn't come in wonky.

Oh god I soooo feel for you. My daughter will be 4 in just over a month and when she was 2 I ran from a wasp and knocked her into a bench, I knocked one tooth out (one next to her front tooth) and one of her front teeth is still clinging on for dear life, 2 years later.
it was the worst day of my life!
Anyway, we got an emergency appt, we still had the tooth but they said they wouldn’t do anything with it as it was a milk tooth and didn’t want to disrupt the big tooth coming down. She had an x Ray to check it hasn’t damaged her big tooth (weirdly you can already see the adult teeth up there), and she had to go back for checks every week, then 2 weeks, then 6 months etc.
I was absolutely distraught, I ruined my little girls teeth ☹️ But the dentist reassured me it happens all the time (albeit not usually their own mother knocking them out!) and there will be lots of kids in school with teeth missing.
Although sore, be sure to keep brushing to avoid gingervitis, which my daughter got.

Ah thank you all three of you for responding so quickly! Really appreciate it and very reassuring to know that this is actually more common with little ones than I thought. Scared the life out of me!!

Noted on an xray, DC's only had visual assessments thus far but granted they haven't been dental experts in urgent care and A&E so shall be asking for this tomorrow. Silver lining that DH will be with me tomorrow to help out.

Glad your accident had no lasting effect @GreyDuck. DH had a similar problem with knocking his two adult teeth forward as an older child and he's still not happy with them to this day, so think I'm being extra paranoid!

Yep feels like it's going to be a long period before the adult ones come through @Kanoe2. Just going to have to nickname DC baby gap tooth until then 😂

And @Twelve8Ts very helpful thank you for sharing. I'd react the same way to a wasp so you're not alone there 😅 Glad they've been fine as she's grown.

Thanks again everyone you've made this tired mummy feel a better before bed! Fingers crossed all goes well tomorrow at the dentist 🤞

My 2 year old fell out of a supermarket trolly, I can’t remember why as it was a long time ago. A bottom baby tooth cracked and had to be removed in two pieces. I didn’t realised the root would be so long! No long term damage to adult teeth that followed.

SO long aren't they! Glad there hasn't been any lasting issues.

We took DC to the emergency dentist today and they're not concerned. The tooth is fragmented so there's some tooth left in DC's gum but they said it'll come down when it's ready and to just make sure we attend appointments.

Thank you all for sharing your stories it's definitely helped this last 24 hours.
