High platelets in 4 year old

MidnightN · 10/05/2024 12:32

My 4.5 year old daughter is on the waiting list for an adenotonsillectomy. She has recurrent infections in her ears, throat and chest. (3 lots of antibiotics in March and April)

The GP sent us for bloods due to ongoing lethargy and her struggling to pull herself round after each bout of illness.

they have all come back normal except her platelets are high.
Normal range is 150-450 and hers has come back at 924.

The GP has booked a telephone apt with us at 3pm but I’m due to go away in an hour for the weekend and I’m in panic mode.

any insights would be much appreciated TIA

No advice, but a handhold. Hopefully it is something minor and easily rectified.

Thank you.

The Dr couldn’t really shed any light apart from to say she has had to ask a paediatrician for the next steps.

raised platelets can occur due to infection (called a reactive thrombocytosis) - it may just be to do with that. Sounds like the GP is being sensible though and considering any other possibilities with the paediatrician.

Were the other bloods normal?
my little girls platelets were high at one point, but we were told that was due to her hb / iron being slightly low?
could be a factor. But hope you get some answers soon xxx

Yes all other bloods seem to be normal. Thank you xxx

Most common reason is recent infection (reactive thrombocytosis, as a PP mentioned). If the rest of the full blood count was normal, then that becomes even more likely.

yeah she has had so many infections in the last 2 months so it does sound like that is the likely cause.

Hi do you have any updates please? My sons came back at 699 in June, and his repeat came down to 440 in July.

I'm in panic mode because they were high before but doctors refusing to test him again because it's traumatic with him only being 4 😔 xx

Unseenentity · 29/11/2024 22:35

If they are now normal / near-normal and there was never suspicion of a serious disease, I think it's pretty reasonable not to retest.

Hi, it’s so worrying isn’t it. We eventually saw a paediatrician. By then her bloods had come down from 920s to 600s, he said in the absence of any other worrying symptoms we are going to put it down to chronic inflammation as she is waiting for her adenoid and tonsils removed.

did they do a blood film microscopy?

Aww that's great news!

I'm not sure what that is, but they did look at his blood under a microscope and said everything looked normal 😊

Yes I think that’s what that is!

if you still don’t feel happy then push for more answers, you know your child best.

at her last bloods in October they were still high but just over normal, hoping once she has her operation it will settle down.
