Hayfever medicine not helping!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 08/05/2024 09:54

I’m not sure what else I can do to help my child. Nine years of age, seems to have this acute phase of hayfever where their eyes go extremely puffy and their throat itches constantly.

Thry struggle to take tablets, so so far I’ve tried liquid Benadryl and Piriton. I also use the kids nose spray and eye drops. Still not getting rid of it. You can’t get loratadine as a liquid so im not sure what else to do!

Ant other thoughts or do I just need to pick a hayfever medicine and stick with it instead of chopping and changing?

You definitely can buy loratadine as a liquid, my two take it daily during hayfever season.

Speak to your pharmacist or GP. You do sometimes need to trial a few different anti-histamines. Loratadine does absolutely nothing for me or my children.

And yes, Boots do a Loratadine liquid.

You can get loratadine as a liquid I’ve just bought some today from Amazon. It’s a Claritin one in mixed berries flavour

Speak to pharmacist.

There is absolutely no reason to still be using Piriton nowadays when better and cheaper alternatives are available.

Also remember she has to take it every day during hayfever season. It's not like paracetamol when you give it as required. She has to have it every day. Other things to consider -

If she has longer hair she needs to wash it every day and keep it tied back.

Use vaseline up her nose in the morning. It feels icky at first but can create a barrier.

Don't dry any of her clothes or bedding outside.

If it is really bad go for a triple whammy - medicine, nose spray and eye drops and again your pharmacist should be able to advise. I'm pretty sure I was prescribed beconase when I was a child.

My dad, myself, my children and my grandchild are all martyrs to hay fever. Some experimentation with different allergy medicines may be needed.
Try and get a doctor's appointment if you can. Fexofenadine is a new generation of antihistamine and can be take in a smaller dose by 6+ children.

A tiny smear of vaseline just by the nostrils can help as can sunglasses. Good luck

If you can afford it you could also consider getting an air purifier for her bedroom.

Ok I’ve ordered the liquid Loratadine. The bloody chemist said it didn’t exist but they obviously meant they didn’t stock it 🤦🏻‍♀️
