Tonsil and Adenoids removal

I'm hoping for some reassurance.

I suffer with anxiety which I am getting help for but obviously I worst case everything.

My son is having his tonsils and adenoids removed in 3 weeks. He is 3

We saw a consultant after both the Dr and Dentist referred us for his large tonsils and repeated throat infections and also he has issues with food and regurgitates a lot as he can't hold much food in his mouth without it touching his tonsils. He also snores the house down,

His surgery is booked but I'm now so emotional! I'm absolutely hiding it from him but I'm so worried. I read about the complication of bleeding afterwards and now I'm terrified.

I was hoping someone who may have had DC go through this may be able to re assure me .

Currently I'm so anxious I just want to cancel it but I know that's not good for him . Thankfully DH is very calm and level headed.

Anyone who can offer any stories would be so appreciated

Oh what a wonderful post OP - it made me quite teary.
This operational is literally life changing for kids like ours and it makes me so cross that In many cases parents have to fight and jump through hoops for their child to have this surgery and benefit from the massive positives that follow. Obviously no surgery is without rush, but it’s wonderful when you see them really thrive and flourish post surgery, and the positive impact it has on family life is immense.
Onwards and upwards to you and your little one @Just1234! xx

I honestly had no idea we would see such big differences and I am just so pleased we proceeded. His entire vocals have changed tone. I feel quite teary listening to him and watching him eat and enjoying food so much.

I know this is a really minor thing for most but I had a slice of cheese cake last night and he asked to try it. I nearly fell off my chair . He's never done anything like that before his food aversions were so bad but he did try it and he's also eaten so many new foods this week alone.

Because I had him on my private health I feel really lucky although I doubted myself a few times because it was so quick from consultation to surgery so I worried but it's been brilliant but I'm so sad so many parents do have to jump through so many hoops to get an initial consultation.

Fantastic update . So happy for you and your DS. I wish my DM had been able to let me have my tonsils removed. I lost my childhood, health and much of my education as I was so ill so often. It has impacted me in so many ways. I’m so glad you are enjoying your DSs new found appetite, speech and increased happiness. You’ve given him a huge gift

I commented on your thread before and just wanted to come on and say my son had his operation yesterday. I'm a complete nervous wreck and checking on him constantly. I'm terrified to leave his side in case of bleeding. He is being an absolute trooper, though, and has barely complained of pain at all, although I know he is in pain. Keeping on top of pain meds regularly and he is managing to eat some foods. My MIL made shortbread and he has been mainly just eating that, which I'm hoping as they are rough will help his throat heal quicker and prevent bleeding. He isn't wanting to drink much though and is refusing ice cream/ice pops.
Praying that he doesn't get much worse.

I was 5 years old when i had my adenoids out. But being the 60s they decided to whip out my tonsils at the same time.
Even though I had no issue with my tonsils

The only thing I will warn you about having tonsils out is that they are there to catch infection from going into your lungs

As I have got older and had more and more colds etc I have become pretty much resigned to knowing that if I get a cold, something that other people get over pretty quickly, with me I need antibiotics to get over the subsequent lung infection which leaves me coughing and off work for weeks.

Spoken to quite a few people over the years who have the same issue.

The problem is that the doctor doesn’t believe you need antibiotics. I am then left for about 10 days until the lung infection has got so bad that they listen to my lungs and only then give me the antibiotics

This is a myth.

With my DD I have seen exactly the opposite

Before having her tonsils and adenoids out, every cold turned into a horrible chesty cough which often kept her up all night and lasted weeks. She never had a snotty nose and I wonder if all the gunk went down instead of out due to the obstructions in her nasal tubes. Since having them out she gets snotty like other kids but gets over colds far, far faster and we haven’t had a single nasty long lasting cough like that since.

Meanwhile I’ve got large tonsils, never had them out (due to my mum having this concern about them stopping infections) and my colds always go to my chest.

I know tonsils are part of the immune system, but for my son, they have caused nothing but problems for most of his life. He has caught every single cold or virus that he has been exposed to. He got a cough every time he was unwell, and because they were always so enlarged, they caused issues with his sleep, meaning his behaviour and development has been affected. So yes, I know they can be quite important, but I think if they cause problems all the time then they are better out than in.

Yalta · 03/07/2024 12:29

The only difference is that having had my tonsils out, catching a cold now means the infection goes straight into my lungs instead of stopping at the tonsils

Each cold I get now turns into a full blown chest infection and it has got worse the older I have got.

How are you doing? I hope you're all doing ok. I had so much fear of a bleed I was so anxious but it does fade ! 3-5 were the worst days for us then I steadily improved and honestly best thing we have done! Hang in there xx

I had that when I had them removed in my 20s, after a couple of bouts of bronchitis I decided to do my best to avoid antibiotics and suffered through it. Every subsequent year I wasn't quite as ill as the previous and after 4 years of doing this my body was finally strong enough to fight normal winter infections.

The only real issue is now when I get a throat infection it is lower in the throat and medicines like Difflam don't reach it.

My DS, who had his removed at 2 1/2, never had the recurring bouts of bronchitis.

We are doing ok, thanks. He has been a lot brighter today and yesterday. He has been wanting to play rather than rest, so I'm assuming he is feeling OK. Last night he woke a couple of times in pain but went straight back to sleep after taking painkiller. We are maxed out for now, he just woke up crying, so gave him paracetemol and he can't have anything else again until 0230, so I'm hoping that keeps him going until then. This is the end of day 4, I'm hoping tomorrow is a good day again. Getting him to drink has been a struggle but I set a timer on my phone for every 10 minutes and he knows to take a sip every time he hears it, so that seems to be working well.

Just1234 · 10/07/2024 20:28

Getting on great thanks, we are on day 9 now and seem to be past the worst of it. Day 7 I think was the worst for him, he struggled a lot and needed the maximum doses of painkillers, but he went the whole day today with only needing medicine once. I've had a look at his throat and starting to see pink now rather than the white sloughy stuff that was there before. He says he is feeling good now and has been back playing and eating like normal again. He has been wakening every night around the same time crying as he's sore, so hoping tonight he gets a better sleep now that the pain seems to be mostly gone. I'm amazed at how much better his breathing is when he is asleep. He's so quiet! He tells me he can hear better, and smell better, which is amazing. I feel so bad that he had gone for so long suffering but glad it's done now. How are things with you?

Alicewinn · 10/07/2024 22:08

Agree with others it's better to get them done now - I got my adenoids out when I was 4 and just enjoyed the days off school

Just1234 · 10/07/2024 22:15

@Killerqueenie I am so so pleased. From day 9 we never looked back it was just better and better each day .

Great to hear such a positive update

It's so tough as parents to witness the pain they are in after an operation, knowing that it was you that pushed to get it done, but I'm hoping down the line he won't remember the pain.

My DS's behaviour has always been quite tricky when he's had calpol, as they contain quite a lot of E numbers. So I'm looking forward to that being out of his system in the next few days too 😅

Just1234 · 10/07/2024 22:47

Ooops I sent that before I meant to

The difference for us has been remarkable! My DS eating has improved so much.

I had to give DS calpol the other day for the first time since and it reminded me how much he refused to take it when he was so poorly

Dear mums
My soon has suffers from adenoids.
I have decided to go privately as we are desperate now for help.
Can anyone recommend a specialist in London or surrounding area please?
Possibly with reasonable pricing?
Many thanks and God bless <3

loveacupoftea18 · 09/01/2025 16:52

@EllaPro we went to Mr Lilly at Ent 4 Kids - he works out of the Cromwell and the Portland.

He was incredible and the aftercare has been absolutely amazing.

minipie · 09/01/2025 17:01

We also went to Ent4Kids although saw Mr Daya who was also excellent.

Thank you @minipie. Can’t find dr Lilly but Mr Daya is still on the list. Will check up on the Ent 4 Kids🙏
