DD 7 burping and stomach pains

My DD is 7 she’s always had a bit of a fragile tummy but the past couple of months it’s been awful, on off diareah, constant vomiting in her mouth and burping. She’s had a tonne of stool tests including h pylori and crohns everything has come back normal. She’s currently at the end of a course of omeprazole which hasn’t helped much. I’ve got a GP appt this afternoon with her but wanted to see if anyone has any similar experiences and what the outcome was? I just don’t want them fobbing me off with ibs. She’s 7. I’ve also been really careful with her diet and a month ago totally took her off lactose but that’s done nothing at all.

Has she had a gastroscopy done? Sounds very like reflux. Is she constipated too?

Cocostardust · 03/05/2024 15:04

Thanks for the reply @MyTwinGirls she’s not had one done yet no, we are still with the GP she hasn’t been referred yet but I am going to ask for that this afternoon as she’s so uncomfortable.

How did you get on with the GP?

rainbowsparkle28 · 03/05/2024 19:25

Has she been tested for coeliac disease? Either blood test or endoscopy? Bear in mind she will need to continue to eat gluten in the run up to any testing so don't cut this out beforehand and that sometimes blood test can come back negative but endoscopy positive so if blood test negative still worth pursuing an endoscopy to be certain.

Cocostardust · 03/05/2024 19:42

Hi, the GP has finally referred her but she said it can be a long wait. She suggested trying gaviscon in the meantime as there sounds like there’s an acid problem, so I wonder why the omeprazole didn’t help.

yes she was tested for coeliac with bloods, all clear. Can you have blood negative and endoscopy positive for this? Reading Google her symptoms seemed to fit much more with lactose intolerance than coeliac, but that’s just at an untrained glance.

i just don’t really understand how a little girl on a healthy diet can have such bad gerd if that’s what it is. She’s belching constantly. There must be a reason for it surely at her age? Just overthinking. Any experiences welcome, thank you all.

My DD 11 has GERD and IBS both cause really bad tummy pains. Otherwise she is fit and well x

ShatParp · 03/05/2024 20:27

I also thought GERD until I read that the omeprazole hadn't helped!
My son has GERD and has not yet had an upper endoscopy, however I have had GERD all my life and the valve at the end of my oesophagus doesn't close properly, I suspect my son has the same thing unfortunately.
Acid reflux absolutely does also affect the gut so it could still be a possibility.
(There is a barium swallow option too, however I have no idea if it's appropriate for children)
I hope you get answers soon, OP. It's horrible when they're suffering!

My son had the same issues and is lactose intolerant and has GERD. I worked out he was lactose intolerant when he drank a cup of milk and his stomach swelled like he was pregnant before vomiting.

Have you tried keeping a food diary ? (You probably do this but) do you read labels? You’ll be surprised how many things contain dairy eg bread, jars of pasta sauce…

My son is basically dairy free with cheese being the only dairy he eats and he eats it less than once a week. With the popularity of veganism, it’s been easy to replace everything else or plan meals that are dairy free because items like dairy free butter and plant milk work perfectly in our family meals.

My daughter also has chronic abdominal pain, lansoprazole makes no difference. We've tried cutting out lactose but are thinking of trialing a completely dairy free diet. She's already strictly GF. Does your daughter get diarrhoea or constipation @Cocostardust ?

MyTwinGirls · 14/05/2024 19:55

@OneSmallPieceOfCheese how old is your DD? My daughter gets both diarrhoea and constipation one week its one or the other x

OneSmallPieceOfCheese · 14/05/2024 23:21

She's 10. And has told me that she does not want to try going dairy free so I guess it's up to her.

MyTwinGirls · 17/05/2024 12:16

Of course its a very big change

StartleBright · 17/05/2024 12:24

Have you tried deworming? Just a thought due to the stomach pains - easy to overlook.
