My DH has been tested for this and has inherited a single copy from his father (not sure if that is the correct terminology). His father has the double type, and is on blood thinners.
DH's GP says that we should test our children at some point, particularly our DD as it can affect pregnancy.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
Thank you.

Can you be tested? Won’t you also need to be a carrier?

Unseenentity · 01/05/2024 10:43

I'm not sure your GP is correct - especially if your carrier status is unknown (assuming no clots in pregnancy and no history of recurrent miscarriage, this would make it less likely again that you are a carrier). Certainly there wouldn't be an indication to test your children before adulthood. In your situation I'd ask the GP to write to haematologists for advice and a guideline to follow-up (outcome may well be no tests for anyone, or screening during the hypothetical future pregnancy only) and/or your husband/father-in-law could ask the haematologist already involved in care if there is one.

I had three miscarriages, one at 14 weeks and took low dose aspirin for my two successful pregnancies until 18 weeks. This was not the result of any tests, just on the suggestion of my GP.

I actually have this and am aiming to get my kids tested at some point. When DS has had operations the anesthatist has had to give the anti clot medications as there's a chance DS has it and the surgeon asked me to check for next time. Ive had some sports drs mention it's handy to know if DS had a blow during rugby etc when he's older.

It's on my list although i keep forgetting

One of my parents has the one factor type (heterozygous). I was told the same thing that it would be relevant to know if pregnant so when I was TTC I went to my GP for a blood test to find out as I need IVF and I wanted to know if I had anything to make the clinic aware of. It was straight forward to do the blood test with my GP and I got the result quickly.

Your DD also needs to know before she might need The Pill as you aren't allowed it if you have FVL

i am heterozygous. No suggestion of testing children. I take daily aspirin.
