Headache every day on waking

DD9 had possible labyrinthitis 4 weeks ago. At the time she had a cold was blocked up and had a mild headache. Main symptom was vertigo. GP couldn't be sure.

It resolved after a couple of days, however for the last 12 days she's had a constant headache, some vertigo and slight nausea.
It's waking her at night and worse in the morning.

We were reviewed in A&E last week after being sent by the gp. They were really not sure what's causing the head pain. Possibly migraine as there's a family history, but isn't usual migraine presentation. Decided not to scan her as she seems well, and neurological exam was normal.

She's still it lots of pain. Painkillers aren't working at all and she's missing school.

A&E dr said to come back if she gets worse or still in pain after a couple of weeks.

Would you take her back and at least ask for pain relief? She's so tired and fed up

I could be wrong but I am almost certain that a headache upon waking is a red flag symptoms and warrants a scan. I’d take her back to the GP and ask for a referral

Thanks yes I think headache on waking is a red flag so am obviously concerned.

However the dr didn't seem to be as dd seems so well in herself.

I don't want to be too hysterical but also want to advocate for dd who is on constant pain.

Never apologise for worrying about your child - you are only trying to advocate for her. You know your own DD best and as a mum you have every right to be concerned. A second opinion from another doctor is definitely the best course of action

I had headaches when waking with sinusitis. Nausea at night too.Very much on the top of my head, could it be something like this perhaps?

Babyhasalottosay · 30/04/2024 22:04

@Knockerknocker thanks that's interesting as the pain is on the top back of her head

In any case intercranial complications of sinusitis can be a medical emergency also, so I echo the advice from others to seek a second opinion. It could be any number of things but you’re definitely better safe than sorry.

I would push for a scan in this situation. The headaches waking her up from sleep as others have mentioned is a red flag and along with the severity of headaches and vertigo being persistent for 2 weeks seems sensible to scan.

stressbucket1 · 01/05/2024 12:27

Has anyone looked in her eyes?

Babyhasalottosay · 01/05/2024 14:02

Thanks all you confirmed I'm not being over dramatic and should taker her back,

Yes @stressbucket1 she's had an eye test last week. All normal.

hi did you get to the bottom of this? Going through similar with my 9 year old,

Comicalanatomical · 01/08/2024 18:54

How often have you given her painkillers. Pain on waking can be a sign of medication overuse.
