Calpol every night?

My 10 month old is teething/has a cold & cough for what has felt like weeks now! The past few nights we have been giving 2.5ml of calpol during the night as she is really unsettled and obviously she sleeps much better after this. Is it bad to keep giving it her each night (probably on the 5th night now).
have tried all the teething gels and powders.

btw just want to add we are waiting to see how she is through the night then giving it her if unsettled, not just giving it her straight away at bedtime :)

I think we did nurofen for teething as it's anti-inflammatory but, yes, DD was on one or the other every night for months. She needed antibiotics as well at one point so I told the GP who said it was fine. One of her first words was calpol!

Nurofen is better than calpol and anbesol liquid is also really good. After 5 nights I would consider a Gp appointment to rule out an ear infection.

I'm on dc3 (who is now 3) and I have definitely done this. If it goes on much longer and you can't see/feel them flinching when you touch where you think they're teething see a GP to rule out other causes.

I wouldn't. Think of gut lining. Ibuprofen will work but it'll wreck the stomach

Mumaway · 26/04/2024 22:03

Calpol should be used rather than ibuprofen which can be a gastric irritant and potentially linked to later life cardiovascular problems. I think after 5 days you should probably be seeing a health professional to make sure there's nothing more going on.

I think 5 nights in a row is OK if she's teething, I've had to do similar with my 9 month old with teething and a cold. I hate the thought of her in pain and teething pain is worse at night. It's not like she's constantly having it. By the way, the dosage is 5ml infant suspension at 10 months so sounds like she's having minimal dosage anyway.

TheFluffiestCat · 26/04/2024 22:15

When DD was that sort of age I asked the GP for advice. She said it wouldn't hurt to give her pain relief every day as long as I knew what the problem was (in our case teeth) and didn't exceed the safe dose.

We had so many spells like this across both DC. I'd always rather give it if I think they need it than leave them in pain.

Ibuprofen will work better for teething if you're willing to give it.
