Is this all chickenpox is?

Hi all,

So my daughter (2) is at nursery and caught chicken pox. They had a confirmed case six days before she first showed spots. She started to show small red spots all over her chest and back on Monday, with a bumpy feeling on her skin. Yesterday they stayed very much the same although a couple started raising to incredibly small blisters. Then this morning they are gone! Apart from she feels itchy and her skin still feels rough from all the tiny bumps. I remember having that feeling when I caught hand foot and mouth, the tiny bumps the virus produced were the itchiest part. She has no spots on her face, hands or feet however, just on her back and chest mainly with a couple on the backs of the arms and legs. I was expecting by now for them to have blown up this morning as we would be on day 3, so I am surprised they have now gone!

This is the first time she has ever had chicken pox. Can it really be this mild?

Thank you :)

No, it doesn’t sound like CP. You can have mild CP with just a couple of spots but they still all blister and then crust over.

Also forgot to add, when can I send her back to nursery if she has no more spots? I know the gov.uk state 5 days from onset of rash and until all the blistered have scabbed over.

Nursery and the GP thought My son had the chicken pox last year, queue 5 days at home and us very smug that he had got it mild.

Took him to the gp the first time as we weren't convinced it was chicken pox.

4 weeks later he got the actual chicken pox. Same gp seen him.and was so shocked. But it is what it is,he had a bad 24 hours then was fine just covered in spots - no scars thought as so young.

Took him to the gp the 2nd time as apparently he had already had chicken pox lol.

Sorry I posted too soon,we took leave off work the first time and now in hindsight it wasn't necessary and he could have returned
As luck may have it we were on 2 weeks annual leave the 2nd lol.

I'd be suspicious that wasn't chickenpox. Even a few spots and a mild case it would still blister then scab.

I have considered that it might not have been, but the initial presentation of the symptoms was very much like chicken pox in its early stages, just not pregressing into the next stage. Basically, these started off as red spotty rash like this all over her chest and back, to then progress to filled (small) red blisters. Not the usually presentation of chicken pox I know but can't work out what else it was. She was also under the weather a few days before and had a slight temperature the first night of spots.

^ these all over her chest, back and arms. If it's not the starting of chicken pox then I'm not sure what it was really 😃 I just need to know if I can send her to nursery tomorrow

It would look clearer and more like chickenpox if I showed the whole body photo however I don't feel comfortable doing that so you will have to take me word for it 😅

Taken from the nhs website, was more similar to this but just did not progress to next stage, my camera doesn't do it justice really.

Not chickenpox. My son had this before and it was some type of a viral rash.

Ok thanks all, I will send her to nursery tomorrow

Viral rash.
My middle daughter had a very mild case of chicken pox. 3 spots. The 3 spots still scabbed over. It was 100% chicken pox as her sisters also got it (both bad cases)

My eldest even at 16 gets a weird chicken pox like rash after a virus. The soots will appear and look like pox, then disappear within a couple of days without scabbing over.

I think your daughter displayed a viral rash. Chicken pox within the school seems like a red herring in this one.

A bit like a sickness bug going around the school but your child is sick due to too many sweets (that analogy is rubbish)

Yes totally get that, we have had viral rashes before however the blisters did become fluid filled which actually threw me the most, similar to the nhs picture on her tummy and arms but I didn't want to show that picture. However since it's gone I don't think it is pox

It is a weird one. My DDs first few rashes were not blisters. As she got older they became very fluid filled blister like.
She also gets the viral purple rash which did not disappear . In hospital constantly when she was younger as I just couldn't risk me thinking virus and it actually being meningitis.

Kids, they stump you! I thought I knew all types of rashes before my youngest was born. Then she came with all sorts of new ones!

It was very bizarre! She had red spotty rash all over and then filled with fluid so I thought it must defitnely be chicken pox and she was going to wake up covered! We have had lots of chickenpox in our area recently, it's been doing the rounds so I was prepared. However she is fine and the rash is like I said going. Interesting to know that your daughter's rashes became fluid filled when older, as we haven't experienced that yet- she has just turned two! Im happy it's not chickenpox, but still am dreading the day she gets it. Not sure about the itching though, she was very upset itching her tummy and saying ouch this morning even though nothing was really there anymore apart from a bumpy rash!

For anyone following, turns out it was a variation or similar virus to hand, foot and mouth which we have had too many times to count. However, this time she shared it with me for a second time (first time was absolutely awful!). I got a very slight rash on the stomach, to then developing a mouth blister which I put to being very run down, and now a very sore throat full of sores and blisters! She is now ok thankfully. Just one of those weird nursery bugs!
