Lymph lump worries

ButtercupsMum · 20/04/2024 06:37

My DD has had a painless lymph node under jaw for at least 5 weeks. She's lost weight and looks awfully run down.

Dr has done bloods and requested scan.

Bloods reveal low thyroid and low folic acid. Meds have been given for both of these.

However, still waiting on scan for Lymph node and Dr says this lump in NOT connected to the thyroid problem.

Going out my mind with worry over the possibility of Lymphoma. Anyone experience similar?

If it's helpful - statistically the proportion of lymph nodes in children that represent serious disease such as cancer is teeny-tiny. Hard to say beyond that as "unwell" in children covers a wide range, but on the whole GPs are good at identifying the ones who truly should be urgently worried about.

A scan can be nice to have in terms of reassurance but are rarely where a diagnosis comes from.

Update following scan. Confirmation that's its a lymph node, Full exam done, another blood test booked and on urgent referral to Hematologist.

Worrying time of course, but on a positive daughter not phased by any of it, which helps day to day.

Not sure what to expect at first hematology appointment!

I'm just waiting for a referral for DD for a painless lump on her neck. She's had it for a few months now but the doctor isn't overly concerned with it as it's the size of a pea and she doesn't really have many other symptoms.

Can I ask how big your DD's lump is?

My son has lymphoma. His was found in his bowels and he didn’t experience many of the typical symptoms such as night sweats, weight loss or tiredness. His was like a sickness bug with vomit and tummy pain because of where it was.

Hopefully it isn’t lymphoma but if it is, it is very treatable and almost always responds well to chemotherapy.

Best wishes to you and your daughter.

Her lump is about the size of a marble. They measured it on the scan but I didn't get the actual measurement.

It's located under her jaw so the soft bit of chin.

Also painless and not causing her any bother. She just looks pale, thin and not her normal glowing self. We at about two months from first noticing it.

Hope all goes well for your DD, waiting is the worst.
