Night time coughing

My DD3 always coughs at night, she doesn't have a cough or cold.. this is a long term persistent cough but only at night when she's led down. It's relentless and wakes her up so often. I've seen the GP who just fobbed it off as 'one of those things' and said she could have recurrent virus' etc but this has been going on for over a year. She is on a 9month waiting list for ENT as she has enlarged tonsils and I think adenoids too as she snores like a trooper too. Could it be linked? Does anyone have any ideas as I'm pulling my hair out as she needs a good nights sleep (as do I 🫣)

Asthma?

NewYearNewMeMamma · 19/04/2024 23:15

My thought was asthma as well. My friends son had the constant coughing at night with no symptoms through the day or showing any signs he was unwell. It turned out to be asthma which he now has an inhaler for.

That's really interesting I didn't know that could be the case with no other symptoms. Thank you for sharing, I'll book in with another GP and ask them about asthma x

DD2 used to get really bad winter coughs, snored and she did end up having her tonsils and adenoids out age 4 due to sleep apnoea. Since the tonsils/adenoids came out she hasn’t had one cough that I can remember! (She’s had colds but they don’t lead to a cough). However her coughs were always due to a virus so not quite the same as your DD.

Agree that it could be asthma.

As an immediate think I would Check that her room isn't too hot also. One of mine used to cough also only at night, turned the heat down slightly & it stopped.,

Mine coughed at night and it was reflux in the end . Child gaviscon, propping the bed head up on blocks to angle the bed helped

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/04/2024 02:24

That's how my son's asthma presented. It went untreated for ages as I didn't know that was a symptom I just thought it was the classic wheezing.

Also think asthma

Freeasabird76 · 20/04/2024 02:29

Yes asthma,my dd was finally diagnosed at 11 after suffering every winter like this, long term croup also.

Fam23 · 20/04/2024 19:32

Another vote for asthma. My son had nighttime coughing as his only symptom and is now on treatment for asthma. Good luck with returning to the gp x

Fam23 · 20/04/2024 19:33

Might also be worth checking there’s no mould/ dust in her room as this may trigger it too x

AuntieMaggie · 20/04/2024 19:39

Try an antihistamine - could be an allergy

Cottonbud777 · 21/04/2024 13:19

Definitely sounds like asthma. My DD 6 had a cough at night from the age of 2. From the age of 5 she was on constant antibiotics due to developing lung infections every single time she got ill. She had antibiotics every month for around 6 months and it took me taking her to the doctor with respiratory distress for them to finally diagnose her. My advice is don’t delay it. If you think it’s asthma keep going back until they listen. DD now has terrible asthma and she’s out of breath constantly.

We don't usually diagnose asthma under the age of 5. Need to take a robust family history/history first. I agree, re the checking for mould
