Cut knee -first aid fail

Evening. My son fell and cut his knee yesterday at school. The school called me to collect him and have a look at his knee. He is definitely a mummy's boy. He is 12. He wouldn't let anyone clean it, even me. It looked bloody and a bit gunky but appeared clean enough. He agreed to a bath to "wash it" and only stayed in the water for a few mins. We patted around the cut dry and covered with a plaster and I took him back to school.
This morning he was fine and he hasn't really grumbled about it. I finally got him to take the plaster off this evening and it looks like there is white stuff in it. I am making the assumption this is it trying to scab, but my mum has me panicking now saying it's fatty tissue and I should have got him stitches. Please help a Mumma out and tell me if I have been awful or if it's healing fine just a bit wet. Many thanks

School first aider here.

Did they say how it happened/what surface he fell on?

I can’t imagine secondary school would ask you to collect for a cut knee unless there was a bit more to it.

I’m not sure about fatty tissue but it looks a little like a puncture wound to me. Is it possible there’s a bit of sharp gravel embedded in there?

That looks nasty OP. Poor DS. I'd probably have it looked at to be on the safe side. In the meantime, I'd get it patted over with an antiseptic wipe or even better, put some antiseptic cream on it.
Last year DD rubbed some skin off her big toe in new shoes... We thought nothing of it until three days later when we were in a and e because the toe had swollen up and gone purple and she had a red line tracking up her leg!
I'm overly cautious with everything now!

I don't think that's properly clean. It needs washing - try the shower on gently and warm water. It then needs looking at.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 18/04/2024 22:04

Looks like a decently deep hole. It does look like it needs a proper clean. Do you have a minor injuries nearby? Or a nurse appointment at the GP's?

I really don't think it's fatty tissue, it does look like there could still be some dirt/grit in there.

He could do with getting back in the bath for a good 10 mins at least so it really softens up and then gently wiping to make sure it's cleaned up.

I have a little scar on my knee from a similar cut when I was a kid, rollerblading on a bumpy road and skidded on my knees. There was a nice hole like you have in that picture which would scab over and fall off for a few weeks. It did heal, it left a scar but nothing disfiguring and it didn't get infected.

Definitely needs a proper clean to be honest

And some antiseptic too

Ouch, poor Ds 💐

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 19/04/2024 12:30

Tbh it just looks like it needs a good clean. It doesn’t look like fatty tissue.

Good scrub with TCP and a nice fabric plaster gaffer taped on for a week or so (just been on Child of 70s thread...).

If you're unsure OP you could always take him to a pharmacy and they will look and advise what to do. It's hard to tell from pictures
