Cow’s milk reaction - weaning

Started weaning DC2 and gave her cow’s milk for the first time with some porridge. Immediately she was screaming and her face came up in a rash.

she’s had piriton on the doctor’s advice.

Going forward I’m unsure what to do. If she had an immediate reaction is there a chance that she reacts from the milk from my breast milk?

She has had various symptoms which tick the boxes but in my experience they also are very common (reflux, colic, trapped wind). She’s been gaining weight no problem and her nappies have been normal.

Obviously I will speak to GP but I’m wondering if it’s possible to have a reaction to cows milk directly from ingesting but not from breast milk?

My DD was allergic to cows milk but had no reaction from my breast milk. It was a pain for a while but she grew out of it eventually. You may find other things flare up alongside the milk allergy such as eczema and asthma. My DD was also allergic to eggs, but again outgrew it.

Thanks @WhamBamThankU how old was your DD when she grew out of them? Did you just keep offering small amounts to see if a reaction occurred?

Same for mine, rash when eating cows milk or egg but never any issues with breastmilk (and I eat a ton of dairy)

We did milk and egg ladders fairly casually on advice from doctor and she grew out of it by 12 months.

My daughter had a fairly bad case with eggs, and is still allergic to raw egg (so can't handle them without gloves) but can eat it cooked or baked in things. With milk at 12 months she went onto soya milk and outgrew it about age 5/6. I'd speak to your health visitor for advice as it may have all changed since I dealt with it! Just know that it's manageable and not the end of the world Smile

I believe it's less likely with immediate reactions versus delayed reactions. I would still do a 4 week trial of no dairy. We only discovered my daughter reacted to me eating fish after she reacted to fish directly. She has delayed allergies and reacted to a lot of the foods I was eating. She was fine with fish if I ate it less than once a week

It might be worth looking into A1 versus A2 milk. If I remember correctly breast milk, goat/sheep are A2 as is a large proportion of Jersey and Guernsey. My son vomits on A1 (so all supermarket cow's milk) but drinks litres of Abel&Cole Guernsey milk. He was fine with breast milk and reacted badly to weaning onto cow’s milk
