Mumps

I think my 17 year old might have mumps. Mild dose but even so. He's had both MMR doses.

He's in A level year. Meant to go back to school from hols tomorrow. Has this happened to anyone else's child?

Presume ring doctor? How long would he be infectious for if it is indeed mumps?

How's he feeling? Does he have a fever?

If he's had both MMR doses then maybe something like glandular fever would be more likely.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/04/2024 14:19

I would call 111 for advice

Tulipvase · 14/04/2024 14:21

Mumps as an adult can be much worse, what makes you think it’s mumps?

According to the NHS he should be off school for 5 days from the start of the illness.

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 18:41

He's got a swollen face. Had a bit of a temp. Says he doesn't feel too bad but under the weather. Definitely had both vaccines as checked last night. Was going to ring doctors in the morning

I’d have thought it would be unlikely given he’s vaccinated but obviously not unheard of. Hope he feels better soon regardless. I have one doing A levels and one doing GCSEs this year……

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 18:47

Could be glandular fever...did have a bit of a sore throat? What's the incubation period? I'm trying to work out where he might have caught it. He does play rugby....hadn't been at school for the last two weeks.

Good luck with A levels and gcses....
My other one is doing her finals at uni...lives here part time (complicated...)

12 to 25 days apparently, 17 average. The vaccine is approx 88% effective. I guess the difference with mumps and glandular fever will be swelling in a testicle, if he were to get that. I think mumps swelling is quite obvious - does he look like a hamster?

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 19:13

Kind of. He had quite a swollen face and neck. Particularly on one side. Temp is 37. It doesn't seem high enough for glandular fever and no rash.
He says testicle are ok. He was very 😳.

He's been over doing the revision. We've had words.

haha I can imagine, poor boy and his testicles but I think that swelling happens a few days in. You can, apparently, only get mumps on one side. It’s the parotid glands, perhaps check and see if his swelling matches?

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 19:22

Will do. That makes sense. I had it twice as a child. One side then the other - in the school holidays. I was very miffed.

My ds got mumps despite being fully vaccinated..
It was a mild case but he was still a bit poorly..
Massive hamster cheeks and complaining about aching groin...

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 19:57

Thanks for that. I think I'll talk to doctor tomorrow. I'm not sure the approach will be that different whether it's mumps or glandular fever

Think mumps is a notifiable disease so yes I'd seek advice from your gp

Exasperatednow · 14/04/2024 20:16

Ok. Will do.

So been to doctor. Stress. Cortisol effect.

Now he might listen about taking better breaks...

OP posts:
Tulipvase · 15/04/2024 19:43

Well I’m glad it wasn’t mumps, hope he listens to you now!

Exasperatednow · 15/04/2024 20:04

Apparently he now feels better that the doctor has told him.

He had a bad sore throat at beginning of holidays so his immune system was depressed. The stress cause a mild temp and facial swelling...slightly high bp (I feel a proper numpty thinking it might be mumps - but at least if got him to speak to the doctor).
He's got to speak to her again in two weeks. Thank goodness we have a great gp surgery.

Glad it wasn’t mumps and glad he spoke to the Gp for his mental state. Hopefully he takes a break and feels much better on his two week check.
I’m going into week 6 of being off sick from work with stress at the age of 34 and wish that I’d addressed these issues sooner.

Exasperatednow · 15/04/2024 22:38

Hope it gets better for you too.
