NICU stay for RSD! Any positives?

My little boy was born at 34+1, weighing 5lb 3oz (2380g)

He is currently on day 5 of NICU… for respiratory distress syndrome.

He has come off the ventilator and is down to 21% of vapotherm.

I’m still terrified and I just want to know he will be ok / home one day. We are in a grade 3 NICU, so in great hands. They don't seem concerned about him at all, he's shown so many improvements!

Any positive stories of a stay in NICU for respiratory distress syndrome? Xx

Our dd was born at 34 weeks at 6lbs 2ozs, she was in NICU and then SCBU for RSD and other related issues. She was there for a month. It was incredibly difficult for us all, but we got there in the end!

Not personally but as a midwife I see this all the time. Generally staying in hospital up to about a week and then home with good outcomes.

Caveat to say obviously length of stay and progress will be affected by lots of different variables!!

Very similar to you, ds was born at 34+3, 5lb4 and was in NICU with RSD. Ventilated for 5 days. We were in a for a while, he had some setbacks and had to move back from SCBU to high dependency when he got pneumonia, but he came home after 7.5 weeks and has been absolutely fine since. That was 18 years ago! Not even had a chest infection or anything to suggest he ever had anything wrong with his lungs. Hope it all goes smoothly for you. The hardest bit for me was after I had been discharged but ds was still in hospital, it seemed to go on forever.

Generally that's an okay weight for a 34 weeker. Hopefully he will get stronger and pull through quite quickly. My 34 weeker was 4lb 2. We weren't told about any RSD. They are all different and verbally by 34 weeks or so they need some support and get there. He will be getting the best support.

Yes, my now 16 year old nearly died from this when they were a baby. Entirely healthy now with no damage done, they were also premature

Oh my! Really? What complications did she have? My son seems like he's doing really well, but this is my biggest fear x

He was just so poorly at the start, once he turned a corner he went from strength to strength and he’s not stopped since! It sounds like the worst is over for your son, fingers crossed he’ll be home soon

My dd’s heart stopped and her lung collapsed, but once they re inflated it it never happened again thankfully. It’s a very scary time.
