Must have for Chicken Pox?

55Sainz · 05/04/2024 12:36

There's been a chicken pox outbreak at my DDs childcare provider and I'm just waiting for it to appear here. DD is 2.

Aside from calamine lotion, what else should I buy for her so it's here and ready for when the pox eventually arrive, whether that's this time round, or in the future.

Looking for all recommendations :)

The vaccine ( if you escape this time)

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 05/04/2024 12:38

Vaccination asap.

Theduchy · 05/04/2024 12:38

I found oat baths gave my DD the most relief.

Greybay · 05/04/2024 12:39

Or I think the vaccibe works even if you're already exposed but you'd have to check that out.
It's pricey though.

I really can’t understand why people who can afford the vaccine don’t do it. I know it’s not usually a dangerous illness (although it can be), but spending about £150 to spare a little one a really, really horrid illness seems a very good deal to me.

Its not too late to get it OP!

Virasoothe gel was amazing for overnight.

WhiskersPete · 05/04/2024 12:47

We used Virasoothe and Poxcillin. Both were better than calamine. Keep in fridge for extra soothing.

The pharmacist is wrong. You absolutely can have it after exposure.

Poxcillin and ice pops and calpol.

We're lucky DD had it fairly mild and didn't seem bothered by itching too much (although we were on it with the poxcillin routine as soon as the spots appeared).

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/04/2024 13:21

Vaccine.
DD had it. I had it very bad, in my eyes, mouth and other places! Very ill for two weeks and lost a considerable amount of weight.

It’s included with the mmr in the US. I don’t know why it’s so normal to put a child through a preventable (and disfiguring) disease.

Maybe get a second opinion on that...

dd was only 6 months and it was horrific. I bought everything- virasoothe, poxicillin ( wish we’d done the vaccine though so def get it if she doesn’t catch it this time). I actually found the calamine lotion gave dd the most relief but I did use the Poxicillin mousse on her genital areas as it’s anti microbial and you don’t want it getting infected. Also did oat baths but also washed her in dermol 500 which helps itching and again good for avoiding infections

Hall84 · 06/04/2024 23:20

DD had chicken pox twice. Yes to both poxclin and virasoothe and if she's old enough antihistamine liquid.
My routine went:
7am poxclin/virasoothe/antihistamine/calpol
10-11 oatbath (put them in a sock, tie the sock so the water pours into the bath through the sock and squeeze it out)
1pm calpol/virasoothe or poxclin
4 poxclin/virasoothe
7pm poxclin/virasoothe/antihistamine/calpol to knock out the itch so they can get to sleep.
This gives you a spare calpol and poxclin/virasoothe overnight.
I understand that calamine isn't always recommended now as it can be drying so actually make the itch worse & I don't think you can use ibuprofen for temp because it can increase the risk of the skin becoming infected but I am not a dr.

Use virasoothe rather than calamine lotion. And DON'T use ibuprofen.

diggermama · 06/04/2024 23:36

Use Head and Shoulders original shampoo as bubble bath! Best Mom hack I've ever been told, as well as a calpol syringe for splinters!
Mine had chicken pox at 2.5. Calamine lotion just made the itching worse, DS was frantic and crying with that on. Honestly, H&S shampoo, fantastic stuff. Relieved the itching and dried them up super fast.
