Took DD4 to A&E 3 nights ago after a few days soaring temperature, vomiting, lethargic and loss of appetite. After what felt like the longest wait ever, finally seen by the Doctor who said she has tonsillitis - she's been given Antibiotics and steroids plus to take calpol.
I've been following this for 2 days now and she doesn't seem to be getting any better? Does anyone know how long before things will start improving?
Very tired FTM here and never had tonsillitis myself so have no idea, just very worried Sad

I'm an adult in my 50s and have had tonsilitis since Monday and there's no sign of it improving. I thought I had covid because I've felt so unwell, can't get out of bed etc. The doctor told me that tonsilitis is doing the rounds at the moment and it's really bad. The TV doctor Alex George is currently in hospital with tonsittis.
Just try and keep the fluids up and antibiotics if prescribed. I don't know how long it will last but lots of rest helps. I've slept for 4 days and haven't eaten either. Nasty thing!

I get tonsillitis regularly and both my DC have had it, one quite recently.

I think you should start to see an improvement in the next day or 2, especially if on antibiotics. It really is awful so you have my sympathy. My DD found things like ice pops, ice cream and throat spray helpful (you’ll need to check the age for that though.)

Hope they feel better soon!

MustDust · 04/04/2024 21:23

Neither of my children have had tonsillitis, but I'm quite prone to it, even now. My experience is first 2/3 days on antibiotics I'm no better, but by day 5 I wonder why I ever needed them. Only you know your own child and if they are getting any better/worse, but as no one else has replied I just thought I'd mention my experience. Lots of ice cream is my go to when I have it. Hope they're on the mend soon💐

DC used to get tonsillitis a lot and the antibiotics did used to take a couple of days to kick in.
The doctors always advised alternating Calpol
and Ibuprofen (each one every four hours) and plenty of fluids and ice cream. Ice lollies/ ice poles were good as they were easier to swallow.

Thank you all so much! Flowers
Just a few comments has reassured me already.
It's just DD and Me so I can't turn to anyone else for help and find myself getting really worked up if she's ill!

It would be helpful to know - What is not improving?
What did they give steroids for? If it was swelling or breathing and there is no change go back.

If anything else still the same as pre medication and not improving then definitely go back.

There are so many things to consider breathing, breathing rate, temp, fluid intake, lethargy, blood sugars if little intake etc etc so if your gut feels it is no better a review via 111 or children's A&E seems reasonable & sensible

aodirjjd · 04/04/2024 21:34

I had tonsillitis as a young adult and felt so ill I was scared I had meningitis! Antibiotics took a few days to kick in.

Babyandmexox · 04/04/2024 21:38

My daughter is 2 and has had it twice! Never needed steroids just antibiotics first time round took her about 3 days to get a bit better and she was still poorly for about a week.. second time round I had it really bad and was soooo poorly never been ill like that and have had bouts of tonsillitis since I was a child it was horrific and needed 2 lots of different antibiotics but luckily caught my daughters early so she didn't really have a chance to be poorly. If she's still the same after the course has finished, go back to gp. Hope she gets better soon, it's horrible when they are poorly and only have you to rely on, plenty mama cuddles 🥰

Babyandmexox · 04/04/2024 21:39

Also I would get some nurofen for her! This really helped my daughter alongside the calpol and antibiotics

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 04/04/2024 21:41

Haven't read all the replies but just to mention that if no improvement with antibiotics in the next day or so, go back to your GP as they may need to prescribe a different antibiotic. Hopefully you won't need to do this though

Dahlia444 · 04/04/2024 21:42

Agree with @rainrainSummerornot if worried about any deterioration contact 111.
One of my DC had it several times a year as a baby and small child. It was terrible. Vomiting, high temp, generally ill and too ill to want to take antibiotics or Calpol etc. In fact he stopped taking Calpol altogether after such bad associations. Paracetamol suppositories were an absolute game changer for him as they brought his temp down and made him feel a bit better really quickly without him having to swallow anything, so then he would take his antibiotics. He was then over the worst after 3 or 4 days. This went on for years but then just as suddenly he grew out of it. Happy days. I basically had a nervous breakdown at the GP though to get them to prescribe the suppositories.

Please contact 111 for further advice if you are worried.

tearfulmam · 04/04/2024 21:50

Thanks all - I'm now worrying again.
How long do you think before I call 111 for advice?
Antibiotics and steroids started yesterday morning, so technically she's had 2 full days. Perked up during the day today, had snacks and was playing. but temperature has returned again tonight now she's sleeping?

tearfulmam · 04/04/2024 21:51

Btw - when I called 111 the first night there was an hour and 25min wait for a call back. I'm honestly not putting it off but not sure if I should wait until the morning to call again as there was some improvement during the day.

rainrainSummerornot · 04/04/2024 21:56

Trust yourself if worried ring 111 for advise

What were the steroids given for? What are the main things you are worried about?

unsync · 04/04/2024 22:00

Used to take me anywhere between 5-7 days to get better. I used to get it every winter, over and over, and every other cough and cold going, it was miserable. I finally had them removed when I was 17.

tearfulmam · 04/04/2024 22:02

@rainrainSummerornot Steroids were given because she had an allergic reaction to the ibuprofen I had given her, came out in a huge rash! Never knew she was allergic to ibuprofen as I had never tried using it before.
I'm mainly worried about the temperature and know I should probably get off of Google!! My health anxiety rockets at night when she's sleeping Sad

I used to have tonsillitis regularly and took me a few days before antibiotics kicked in. My DD and I got one last year and it took her about 3 days before I started seeing improvement.

Nanamuffin · 04/04/2024 22:03

Tonsillitis is awful. My son had it this year for the first time. It was days of high temperature. Loss of appetite. Prescribed antibiotics. Only better after 4 days and had a week off school.
Hope your DD gets better soon.

rainrainSummerornot · 04/04/2024 22:10

What is her temp? How is she now? Fast breathing? Pulling in at ribs or throat? What is worrying you - if you are worried trust it and ring 111
