The last week or so I've noticed my daughter squinting her right eye sometimes, it's not all the time but she's doing it quite often .

Is this something I should be concerned about? She seems OK otherwise

My uncle had very bad eyes as a child and wore glasses from the age of 2, and my cousin (uncles son) also had an eye issue ans wore a patch for a few years and ended up needing surgery so I'm wondering if it could be something to do with this ?

If she is 22 years old is she going for regular optician checks? In her position that is what I would do as a first step.
Did she have any issues previously with her eyes during routine checks?

Hellocatshome · 31/03/2024 18:23

Im assuming 22 month old. But either way the answer is go to the opticians.

I would definitely get this checked out. I wouldn't go to an opticians on the High Street . Maybe start with your GP or if they say to go to an opticians then find a good quality opticians.

Following cataract surgery I was was told to go to a designated optician who was qualified and able to do post operative checks as they have the equipment to do very thorough checks. Not every opticians place can do them.
Probably at 22 months you may be referred fraught to the eye clinic at your local hospital.

Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you all, I have booked an appointment with the opticians this week and will take it from there

Call the GP, can you capture it on a photo? Do an e consult with the family history?

Everything at this age was done through our GP - all eye tests at the hospital for years.

Daughter needed squint surgery and with my second child I was on high alert, my son appeared to squint but it was nothing. It was his eye shape and the bridge of his nose (and my hyper vigilance) that had me worried.

My daughter had surgery and a need for quite a strong prescription and patching for many years. Her eyes are great now. Glasses are needed only on occasion.

Do you mean squinting as in the eye turning in or squinting as in screwing up her eyelids?

If it's one eye turning in, you need to get a referral to children's eye services at the hospital, which you can either do via your GP, health visitor or optician.

If it's screwing up her eye lids, it can often just be a phase and I'd keep an eye on it over the next few weeks and then book a test locally.

I went through the HV when I saw dd squinting. She was then referred to the hospital orthoptist service and ended up with glasses for long sight.

Does the optician definitely deal with children that young? My dd stayed under hospital care until she was age 7 or 8 and then we started using a high street optician

Willowsands1997xx · 03/04/2024 08:59

@theeyeofdoe I mean squinting as in screwing up her eye, always the same eye, so I was wondering if she's doing it to get a better focus with her other eye? Or maybe it is just a habit

I'm going to still take her to the opticians appointment, who have told me they are able to check her , and I will take it from there
