I realised I am pregnant today, I am 8 weeks pregnant, and I use thick undiluted bleach in my sink after I use chicken. Because I have chicken phobic of salmonella. I don’t even wear gloves. I stopped now but did I harm my baby omg , what did i do ?
online only says bleach but nothing about undiluted bleach ! Please anyone used thick bleach early pregnancy and baby is fine.

I would think you're absolutely fine as long as you weren't drinking it!!!

MarshmallowsOnToast · 31/03/2024 14:28

It'll be fine, it's not like you drank it!

Mrssheepskin · 31/03/2024 14:30

It’s fine. People still clean when they’re pregnant…

Toddleramumu · 31/03/2024 14:31

With undiluted bleach and not wearing gloves or mask ?

Yes, this will not impact baby.

Please talk to your midwife about these worries because they're excessive and it'll be a long hard pregnancy if you don't get them under control.

DarkForces · 31/03/2024 14:33

Baby will be fine. Just wear gloves and ventilate when using strong chemicals. Look after yourself too!

distinctpossibility · 31/03/2024 14:33

Gently, you sound extremely anxious and its not going to be easy to live like that for the next 7 months, plus 18+ years once the baby arrives.

Have you got anyone you could talk to I'm real life? I guess you don't have a named midwife yet, but might be worth mentioning your high levels of anxiety at your booking in appointment.

Many women bleach their hair in pregnancy and there is no official guidance which says that's unsafe, so using it in the sink is even less risky. 😘

Maybe spend part of the afternoon outside in the fresh air and open the kitchen window if it will help you feel safer.

gamerchick · 31/03/2024 14:35

What do you mean after using chicken? I've never bleached my sink after cooking a chicken.

I wouldn't worry about causing damage to a teeny embryo from that though.

Mischance · 31/03/2024 14:45

I hope you will manage to relax a bit during the rest of your pregnancy. All is well ... don't worry.
You would throw your hands up in horror if you knew all the things I did when I was pregnant! Three happy healthy children here.

mynameiscalypso · 31/03/2024 14:48

I used undiluted bleach all the time in pregnancy when I was cleaning. Never used a mask or gloves - wouldn't even occur to me to have done so.

gamerchick · 31/03/2024 15:13

Will never wrap my head around people thinking bleach cleans shit though.

doesnt it?

Apollo365 · 31/03/2024 16:31

Just put boiling water on the chicken board in future and then give it a good scrub.
I then use a disinfectant wipe on the side after for good measure. Bleach is overkill.
your baby will be fine btw xx

it’s a disinfectant. It causes cell lysis, of course it cleans things.

Toddleramumu · 31/03/2024 17:59

Thank you 😭

Technically it doesn’t clean it’s a strong disinfectant. It’s not a surfactant afaik.

Sagittarius · 31/03/2024 18:08

Very misleading thread title by the way, but no you wouldn't have done any harm.

Are you washing chicken in the sink, this is not advised, or are you just excessively cleaning after you've used chopping boards etc? It is best to use colour specific boards, hot water and washing up liquid and a good scrub. This is more than sufficient to clean the board, you don't need be to using excessive amounts of bleach.

Temporaryname158 · 31/03/2024 18:12

You need to calm down from this massive over reaction!

I think you need to educate yourself on adjustments need in pregnancy (hardly any) and consider if you have anxiety and perhaps consult a doctor as this is a huge over reaction.

Mouthfulofquiz · 31/03/2024 18:16

Please get a book on pregnancy and read up on what is happening in your body. There is no point in being anxious for the next 7 months or whatever because you don’t know the facts. Kindly, it’s a time for you to look after yourself and be hopeful for the future, don’t waste it on worrying about things that aren’t worth it.

FineWordsButterNoParsnips · 31/03/2024 18:23

OP already has a kid, so will know about pregnancy.

If you're chicken phobic salmonella, don't run the tap over raw chicken. It doesn't 'wash' it and just spreads raw chicken juice everywhere.

Toddleramumu · 31/03/2024 18:35

I have 2 other children. Lol sorry for typos, was typing while having a panic attack. I feel better now and I have calmed down after throwing every bleach product away so I don’t get tempted again . 😭so I am good !

You're not, though. You still think using bleach when you're pregnant is harmful. It isn't.

You're not. You are suffering with anxiety. That's the health concern you need to address, not salmonella or bleach.

CandyLeBonBon · 31/03/2024 18:43

You've got two kids and you think bleach will harm your baby? Are you in the US?

Echobelly · 31/03/2024 18:46

If babies were harmed this easily we would see all sorts of problems - plenty of people have done things they're not 'supposed' to do before they realise they are pregnant but it causes no problems at all.

Remember a lot of things that may be described as 'risks' to a pregnancy are just risks not actual dangers in themselves - eg, if you eat unpasteurised food there is a slightly increased risk of food poisoning, but it is a risk, it's not like it is poisonous to a baby/foetus. Eating unpasteurised food alone won't 'harm the baby'. If you're unlucky enough to get food poisoning from it, which you overwhelmingly likely won't, it most likely still won't cause any problems.
